To honor the victims of the mass shooting in Newtown, Conn., Rockingham Mayor and NC Senator-elect Gene McLaurin and NC Governor Bev Perdue have joined President Obama by ordering the flags in the city, the state, and the U.S. to be lowered to half-staff until Dec. 18. Residents are urged to also follow this order.
“Pray right now, it’s a very sad day,” McLaurin said.
The shooting occurred Friday when a young man opened fire inside a Connecticut elementary school where his mother worked, killing at least 26 people plus himself, including 18 children, according to police.
In a proclamation released by the White House, the President said: “As a mark of respect for the victims of the senseless acts of violence perpetrated on December 14, 2012, in Newtown, Connecticut, by the authority vested in me as President of the United States by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, I hereby order that the flag of the United States shall be flown at half-staff at the White House and upon all public buildings and grounds, at all military posts and naval stations, and on all naval vessels of the Federal Government in the District of Columbia and throughout the United States and its Territories and possessions until sunset, December 18, 2012.”
“Our thoughts and hearts are with the families of the victims of this senseless act of violence in Newtown, Conn. Bob and I are deeply shocked and heartbroken over this tragic loss of life. Our prayers are with all the families of the children, teachers and administrators,” said Gov. Perdue.
Congressman-elect Richard Hudson, of the eighth Congressional District, said: “Renee and I are heartbroken over the shooting in Conneticut. I join President Obama in asking our citizens to pray for those affected by this horrific tragedy.”
Flags shall be flown at half-staff until sunset, December 18, 2012.
