A free holiday concert will be held Dec. 17 as the Richmond County Daily Journal’s gift to the community.
The Army Ground Forces Band will present “Home for the Holidays,” a holiday concert dedicated to troops currently deployed around the world, featuring a concert band and smaller ensembles.
The concert will be held Dec. 17 at 7 p.m. at Richmond Community College’s Cole Auditorium in Hamlet. Admission is free, but you will need to pick up your tickets at either the Cole Box Office or the Daily Journal office.
“It’s a wonderful Christmas show,” said Daily Journal Publisher Rick Bacon. “It’s absolutely free. It’s a tribute to men and women in the armed services, and it’s a chance to get together in the week. I am pleased that the Daily Journal and Richmond Community College can partner together to bring this wonderful family event to the community.”
The newspaper office is at 105 E. Washington St. in downtown Rockingham.
“We look forward to sharing the warmth and joy of the holiday season with the citizens of this great community and we appreciate having the opportunity to say thank you for their year-round support of our soldiers and their families,” said the band commander, Capt. Daniel Toven.
The concert will feature a moving rendition of “Christmas Eve Sarajevo,” music inspired by a cellist who played in the town square as the city was bombed. The celebration of the season will also include “Let it Snow,” “March of the Toys” and “Feliz Navidad.”
The Army Ground Forces Band and its various ensembles, or Music Performance Teams, provide musical support for the Army’s largest command, U.S. Army Forces Command. As just one of only three Army bands with a national touring mission, the band and its MPTs travel the nation, performing at local, regional and national events.
“It is always a real pleasure having the military bands perform for our audience,” Cole Director Joey Bennett said Wednesday. “These talented groups are never a disappointment as they tour through our area, and I think that having the Army Ground Forces Band perform will be impressive.”
“We hope to have a full house for the performance,” said Kiana Taylor, Box Office Manager. “I hope everyone will be excited to see the group perform. We hope to draw community members that may not be able to attend our series performances. This show is sure to put everyone in the holiday spirit since it is a week before Christmas.”
The 64 Soldiers assigned to The Army Ground Forces Band have passed highly selective auditions and are among the finest musicians in the Army Band Program.
