Richmond County is getting in the Christmas spirit, and two live nativity scenes are popping up for spectators to visit.
One nativity scene is being constructed and will be displayed at Mount Olive Baptist Church at 596 E. Washington St. Ext. in Rockingham.
This weekend, starting on Friday at 6 p.m., the live nativity will be open for viewers, but the show isn’t free.
Although there is no admission, “everyone is asked to bring at least one non-perishable food item to donate to Our Daily Bread food ministry in Rockingham,” said Pastor Bryan Blackwell. “There will be seven dramatized scenes from the life of Christ, including the nativity, with costumed actors and live animals. Enjoy the drive through from the comfort of your car as you traverse our 40-acre property. Everyone is invited to stay afterwards for refreshments in our multipurpose building.”
Our Daily Bread is located on Randolph Street in Rockingham, across from the First United Methodist Church. Between 30 and 40 volunteers help run the pantry each week, during the three days Our Daily Bread is open.
Our Daily Bread Director Debbie Rohleder is thrilled about the food drive effort by the church.
“Mt. Olive has been putting on the nativity scene for years,” said Rohleder. “I hope people come out and see how much work the church puts into this. We hope this will be an event that people will want to come out and support because they’re supporting the church and those in need.”
Rohleder is in her eighth year at Our Daily Bread.
Down the road in Hamlet, another live nativity scene will have animals as well.
First Baptist Church of Hamlet, beside the Piggly Wiggly on Hamlet Avenue, will present a live nativity with a live camel, sheep and a donkey, Friday at 5:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. Free hot chocolate and snacks will be served after the first nativity.
