A plate sale at Pat’s Kitchen in Rockingham will collect donations to help a teenage boy in Richmond County who has been battling cancer for two years.

Jonathan Hernandez, 15, has mestatic osteosarcoma, a bone cancer that doctors said had spread to his lungs. He has had successful results on an alternative treatment regime, the Gerson Diet, which requires a diet of pounds of organic fruits and vegetables and other natural supplements daily.

Marshall Berry of Pat’s Kitchen said Hernandez looks like his condition is improving.

“But we just don’t want to take any chances,” said Berry. “It costs about $2,000 a month to get him all the organic fruits he needs. He drinks them in a juice. He’s been on the diet for three years. The Gerson Diet is gradually killing the cancer cells.”

Community members have been rallying behind the boy as he has fought for his life with the unconventional treatments for the past couple of years.

The plate sale will include either barbecue or chicken and will cost $7 each. They will be sold on Dec. 8, from noon until 5 p.m.

Berry said this is the third fundraiser Pat’s Kitchen has held for Hernandez, and they plan to continue as long as they can.

“We’re going to try to do it every year,” said Berry. “Last April we collected $14,000 at his second fundraiser. That’s about seven months worth of food for him.”

But that doesn’t account for normal family bills, said Berry. He said Hernandez’s mother is a Spanish teacher at Richmond Senior High School and his father is a pastor preaching at a church in Laurinburg.

“We are hoping the good Lord sees fit for us to (raise a lot of money) again,” said Berry.

There will be live music all day.

Delivery will be available for five or more orders.

Berry said this fundraiser could not have happened without the support of Susan McInnis and Pat and Lisa Britt who own Pat’s Kitchen.
