The Thomas H. Leath Memorial Library in Rockingham has new book selections that just arrived in the children’s section.
“Llama Llama Time to Share,” by Anna Dewdney, teaches children to share and be more giving to other children.
“Stay Close to Mama,” by Toni Buzzeo, is another new book the library has obtained that teaches children the importance of not straying away too far and keeping safe in public.
Pointing out some of the newest children’s books available were Peggy Wilkes, children’s coordinator, and Deborah Knight, outreach coordinator, who has worked in the library on and off since she was 14-years-old. The two have worked alongside each other for six years and say they “love working together.”
“I didn’t like reading until I started working here surrounded by books,” Wilkes said.
Each year during the Thanksgiving season they like to read “Turkey Surprise,” by Peggy Archer. The story is about two pilgrim boys looking for a turkey. One of the boys didn’t want to kill the turkey so the boys ended up taking home a pumpkin for Thanksgiving instead.
The second very popular story among the kids is, “’Twas the Night Before Thanksgiving,” by Dav Pilkey. The story is about youngsters who take a trip to a farm and have turkeys hid under their shirts because they fear the birds are going to be killed for Thanksgiving.
A new story time has been scheduled for toddlers ranging from the ages of 2 through 4 years, on Tuesdays at 10 a.m. Pre-school kids from the ages of 4 and older can attend story time on Thursdays at 10 a.m. The story time groups now have about 95 kids, and the summer reading program held at the library has increased. As of last summer, the program had an attendance of more than 400 kids.
