With the official opening just around the corner, members of the community have the unique opportunity to support Discovery Place KIDS–Rockingham by making an enduring contribution to the new children’s museum. The museum is selling hand print tiles that will be installed inside the building, forming a permanent display of brightly-colored individual hand prints of children across the region.
Members of the community are encouraged to come to the Richmond Community Theatre this Saturday, from 10 a.m to 1 p.m. to purchase and make their tile. A second event will be held at the theatre on Nov. 17.
“Making a hand tile together is such meaningful way for adults and children to share what may be their first Discovery Place KIDS memory,” said Katie Rohleder, director of Discovery Place KIDS–Rockingham. “The best part is that these children will be able to visit over and over again and mark their own growth.”
As part of the community phase of the museum’s ongoing capital campaign, hand tiles are available for $250 per set, and funds raised will support the museum’s services and programs. Each purchase includes two tiles to complete; one to be displayed permanently in Discovery Place KIDS–Rockingham and the other to be taken home to keep.
“The opening of Discovery Place KIDS–Rockingham will be a momentous event for the region and a lasting legacy,” said Neil Cadieu, Discovery Place KIDS–Rockingham campaign co-chair. “As a centerpiece of downtown, it will be a permanent part of our geography, and the excitement here is already palpable. I encourage everyone to consider buying a hand tile and being a part of this important project.”
Only a limited number of tiles are available. For more information call 704-348-1985 or email info@discoveryplacekids.org. Tiles must be purchased by Dec. 20, 2012, and created by Jan. 1, 2013, in order to be installed for the museum’s opening.
Discovery Place KIDS–Rockingham is a new children’s museum that will provide creative learning-through-play opportunities for children and their caregivers. Expected to draw visitors from across the Sandhills region, the museum will help young children reach developmental and educational milestones through exploration and play.
