ROCKINGHAM — Richmond Senior golfer Cassie Smith was one of two sophomores to qualify as individuals for last week’s 4A Central Regional golf tournament at Pinehurst No. 6.
To grab a spot in the tourney, a golfer needs a scoring average of 110 or better during their conference matches. For the second straight year, Smith was below the mark. This season, she finished with an average of 102 in the six Southeastern Conference contests.
True to her scoring all season, Smith carded a 102 during the regionals Oct. 23 and missed participating in a five-person playoff to determine the final three players to advance to the state tournament. Two of those spots were grabbed by golfers from the SEC — Pinecrest’s Haley Robinson and Purnell Swett’s Jade Hunt.
At the state tournament, Ardrey Kell captured the team title by 11 shots over Pinecrest at Pinehurst No. 6. The event started Monday and concluded Tuesday afternoon.
Sarah Bae, from Athens Drive, defeated Ashley Osiecki, from New Bern, on the second playoff hole to capture individual medalist honors. Pinecrest’s Gabby Weiss was tied for fifth with New Bern’s Shelby Osiecki and Ardrey Kell’s Allyson Markiewicz after finishing with a two-day total of 157.
RSHS soccer playoff opener pushed back
ROCKINGHAM — The Richmond Senior boys soccer team was scheduled to open the 4A state playoffs Tuesday night at Heritage.
However, Heritage coach Scott Sloan called Richmond coach Bennie Howard late Monday to postpone the contest. The game is now scheduled for 7 p.m. today.
The Huskies finished the regular season with a 14-7 mark and were 10-4 in the CAP-8 Conference to earn second seed. The Raiders enter the postseason with an 11-5-3 record and are the No. 4 seed out of the Southeastern Conference.
Richmond hasn’t won a playoff game since 2008, when it clipped Hoggard 2-1 in overtime in the first round, before falling to East Chapel Hill 1-0 in the next round. This will be Heritage’s first appearance in the postseason in three years of competition.
