Discovery Place KIDS–Rockingham has received a $25,000 gift from FATZ to be used for general project support. The donation is part of the ongoing capital campaign for the new children’s museum that will help meet facility and endowment needs and provide funding for exhibition upgrades, fabrication and maintenance.
“Our mission is to offer great food while taking care of people in a way that feels like home,” said Karen Margolis, operating partner of FATZ in Rockingham. “Our restaurant is part of the fabric of this community, and we are proud to contribute to the growth of Richmond County and the development of educational opportunities for our children.”
Cafe Enterprises, Inc., headquartered in Taylors, S.C., serves as the parent company of 48 FATZ restaurants in North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia and Virginia. With 3,600 associates and operating partners from the areas where its restaurants are located, the company prides itself on nurturing strong connections to the community at large by maintaining genuine, detail-focused service in a warm and inviting atmosphere. FATZ’s commitment to community service has resulted in a number of rewarding and successful philanthropic efforts over the years. Founded in 1988 in Spartanburg, S.C., the first FATZ was a converted peach stand that started out as one single, small restaurant. Cafe Enterprises was later established, enabling FATZ to expand with more locations in states across the South.
“FATZ and Discovery Place KIDS–Rockingham are family-focused regional assets that encourage quality time spent together,” said Kenneth Robinette, Discovery Place KIDS–Rockingham campaign cabinet member. “We are delighted to have them as a partner in this endeavor, and Karen as a leader in this community, as we build a destination that encourages social and educational opportunities for this area’s youngest residents.”
As the museum prepares for an early 2013 opening, a community phase continues to secure funding needed for renovation of the building, program development, exhibition design and fabrication plus long-term support. Discovery Place KIDS–Rockingham will offer an experience that encourages children and their caregivers to interact together through imagination, play and creativity.
The Discovery Place KIDS–Rockingham project was launched by the commitment of $6.6 million in funds from the Cole Foundation and the Richmond Community Foundation. Their visionary leadership gifts, which were facilitated by The Foundation For The Carolinas, are intended for the long-term sustainability of the museum.
