BOONE — Eric Breitenstein rushed for 123 yards and scored the game-winning touchdown as Wofford knocked off Appalachian State 38-28 in a Southern Conference clash.
The Terriers ran for 393 yards in the contest and averaged 6.3 yards per attempt. Wofford improves to 6-1 on the season and 4-1 in the league.
The Mountaineers (5-3, 3-2) took a 28-24 lead on Tony Washington’s 99-yard kick off return for a touchdown late in the third quarter. Breitenstein and the Terriers responded with an 11-play, 75-yard drive with the go-ahead score.
Former Richmond Senior linebacker Phillip LeGrande had four tackles for Wofford, including 1 1/2 for loss as well as a quarterback hurry. Former Richmond offensive lineman Alex Coulthard was listed as playing in the contest for Appalachian State, while Andy Shuler did not see action.
The Terriers will battle The Citadel 1:30 p.m. Saturday at home, while the Mountaineers will hit the road to face Western Carolina 3:30 p.m. Saturday.
WAKE FOREST 16, VIRGINIA 10
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Chad Hedlund booted three field goals and the Wake Forest defense held Virginia to 48 rushing yards on 32 carries to post a 16-10 win.
The victory snapped a two-game losing streak for the Demon Deacons (4-3, 2-3) and a ended a three-game skid in ACC play.
Defensively, Tylor Harris helped seal the win by sacking Cavalier quarterback Phillip Sims for an 11-yard loss on third-and-12 from the Wake Forest 42.
Virginia (2-6, 0-4) has now lost six in a row.
Former Richmond Senior linebacker Justin Jackson was credited with six tackles and a forced fumble for the Demon Deacons.
Wake Forest will welcome No. 14 Clemson to BB&T Field 7:30 p.m. Thursday. The game will be broadcast on ESPN.
DAVIDSON 28, CAMPBELL 21
BUIES CREEK — Davidson picked up its first victory of the season behind three touchdown passes from Jonathan Carkhuff to stop Campbell 28-21 in a Pioneer Football League contest.
Carkhuff completed 31 of 44 passes for 340 yards for Davidson (1-6, 1-3).
The Wildcats jumped out to a 14-0 halftime lead and built their advantage to 28 before the Fighting Camels scored three touchdowns in the fourth quarter.
Campbell quarterback Dakota Wolf rushed for 154 yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries. The Fighting Camels have now lost five in a row to fall to 1-6, 0-4.
Former Richmond offensive lineman Corey Smart was not listed as playing for Campbell according to the participation sheet.
The Fighting Camels will head to Kentucky to face Morehead State 1 p.m. Saturday.
WINGATE 34, CATAWBA 28
WINGATE — Robbie Nallenweg connected with Bryan Caffrey for a 21-yard touchdown to lift Wingate to a 34-28 overtime victory over Catawba.
Caffrey’s reception came three plays into the Bulldogs’ first possession of overtime. The Indians missed a 37-yard field goal on its drive.
Wingate is now 5-3 on the year and 4-1 in the South Atlantic Conference, while Catawba drops to 3-5, 1-4.
Nallenweg finished the contest 37 for 58 with 385 passing yards and two scores but threw four interceptions which allowed the Indians to remain close.
Former Richmond offensive lineman Andrew Parsons started at left guard for Catawba, which finished with 300 yards of total offense.
The Indians will attempt to break their four-game losing streak when they play host to North Greenville 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
CARSON-NEWMAN 31, UNCP 10
PEMBROKE — Carson-Newman rolled up nearly 500 yards of total offense to knock off the University of North Carolina-Pembroke 31-10.
Tyron Douglas ran for 125 yards and two touchdowns for the Eagles, which snapped a two-game losing streak to the Braves. Carson-Newman finished the game with 351 rushing yards, while limiting UNCP to 38.
UNCP quarterback Luke Charles was 23 for 37 in the game for 294 yards and a score.
The Braves dropped their second straight game to fall to 5-3 on the season. The Eagles upped their record to 5-2.
Former Richmond wide receiver John Rich had three catches for 41 yards in the loss, while cornerback L.J. Stroman recorded three tackles. Offensive lineman Justin Watts was not listed as playing according to the participation sheet.
SAINT AUGUSTINE 34, FAYETTEVILLE STATE 28
RALEIGH — Davonte Tolliver scored on a 7-yard run in the third overtime and the Saint Augustine defense thwarted Fayetteville State on its possession to pull out a 34-28 CIAA victory.
The Broncos (1-7, 0-5) had two opportunities to take the lead in regulation and were unable to convert two field goal attempts. The first was from 45 yards out with 6:40 left and sailed right. The second went wide left from 25 yards out with 3 seconds left.
Saint Augustine improves to 5-3 and 3-2.
Former Richmond Senior offensive lineman Kevin Alfonso started and helped Colon Bailey rush for a career-high 220 yards and two touchdowns on 37 carries. Christopher Diggs was not listed as seeing time according to the participation sheet.
SOUTH CAROLINA STATE 27, FLORIDA A&M 20
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Jalen Simmons scored the game-winning touchdown on a 7-yard dash as South Carolina State downed Florida A&M 27-20 in overtime in a MEAC clash.
Simmons rushed for 144 yards on 24 carries to help the Bulldogs end a two-game losing streak. Richard Cue also scored on a 7-yard scamper for South Carolina State (3-5, 2-3).
Florida A&M (3-5, 3-2) forced overtime by scoring 13 fourth-quarter points.
A box score from the contest was not able at press time.
South Carolina State will play host to Howard 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
CHARLESTON SOUTHERN 31, PRESBYTERIAN 21
CHARLESTON, S.C. — Charleston Southern scored 18 unanswered second-half points to pull away for a 31-21 Big South victory over Presbyterian.
Teddy Allen rushed for a career-high 153 yards and four touchdowns for the Buccaneers (3-4, 2-1).
Presbyterian (2-6, 0-3) led 21-13 at halftime, but was limited to 45 yards of offense and two first downs in the second half.
Former Richmond Senior offensive lineman Dakota Truett didn’t see playing time for the Blue Hose according to the participation sheet.
Presbyterian will welcome Stony Brook to Bailey Stadium 1 p.m. Saturday.
NC WESLEYAN 45, GREENSBORO 23
ROCKY MOUNT — Dwayne Hollis scored two touchdowns to spark North Carolina Wesleyan to a 45-23 USA South Conference victory over Greensboro.
The Battling Bishops scored 45 straight points including 39 in the third quarter to snap a five-game losing skid.
Former Richmond Senior quarterback Laron Ellerbe scored North Carolina Wesleyan’s first touchdown on a 5-yard run with 1:44 left in the second quarter. Ellerbe finished with 30 yards on eight carries and was 5 for 10 for 52 yards through the air.
The Battling Bishops (2-5, 1-3) will return to action at home against Christopher Newport 1 p.m. Saturday.
