LAURINBURG — Scotland continued its march towards a Southeastern Conference tournament championship to match its regular season title after cruising to a three-game victory over Richmond Senior Tuesday night in the semifinal round.
The Fighting Scots defeated the Raiders 25-14, 25-18, 25-11 to advance to today’s championship match against Pinecrest. Scotland swept the season series with the Patriots.
Richmond will advance to the state 4A playoffs, which are slated to begin Saturday, for the first time in two years. The Raiders were selected as a wild-card in 2010 and lost to Greenville Rose in three games. Richmond was an automatic qualifier three seasons ago, when it grabbed the No. 2 seed out of the conference and advanced to the third round before it was also eliminated by Rose in three straight sets.
This year, the preliminary brackets have the Raiders hitting the road to battle the second seed out of the CAP-8. Despite the quick turn-around, Richmond coach Shellie Wimpey believes her team will be prepared for the postseason.
“We have to work hard in practice to get ready for Saturday,” Wimpey said.
Girls finish 2nd, boys 3rd in SEC cross country meet
RAEFORD — Led by Morgan Tedder’s 11th-place finish, the Richmond Senior girls cross country team took second behind Pinecrest at the Southeastern Conference meet Tuesday afternoon at the Carolina Horse Park.
Tedder clocked in with a time of 23:27. Ana Rivers was 17th in a time of 24:49.
“For the first time in about 20 years, we had a girl make the all-conference team,” Richmond coach Reggie Miller said about Tedder’s performance. “That was one of my major goals this year to get a girl on the all-conference team.”
Pinecrest won the girls title with a score of 15, followed by Richmond with 79. Lumberton came in third with a team score of 86 to edge Purnell Swett which had a total of 88. Hoke County was fifth at 106 and Scotland finished with 116 points.
In the boys race, Richmond had two runners earn all-conference honors — Brandon Gibson and Randy Altman. Gibson finished eighth with a time of 17:31, while Altman was 14th, completing the course in a time of 18:59.
Pinecrest claimed the boys championship with a team total of 15. Scotland placed second with 59 points, followed by Richmond. Purnell Swett was fourth, Lumberton fifth and Hoke came in sixth.
Miller was named the conference’s boys coach of the year, while Pinecrest’s John Buchholz was tabbed as the girls coach of the year.
Richmond will return to action Oct. 27 at the Carolina Horse Park in the 4A East Region. The boys race will begin at 10:30 a.m., while the girls will run at noon.
