Join the Rockingham Lions Club for a day of outdoor fun during the Roar at the Park kick-off on Saturday. The event will be held at the Rockingham Lions Community Park, located off Highway 220 north, beginning at 10 a.m, and will host the club’s first annual Golf Ball Drop, along with food, games and fun for the whole family.
Registration kicks off at 10 a.m., followed by a cornhole tournament at 11 a.m.
According to Lions Treasurer Neal Watkins, up to 64 teams can participate in the double elimination tournament, with two members per team. The cost is $40 per team, and prize money is available to first through fifth place.
“This is new for us,” Watkins said.
At 3 p.m., the Lions’ newest fundraiser, the Golf Ball Drop, will follow the tournament.
Watkins explained that participants can purchase a certain amount of golf balls before the drop.
“The golf balls will be up in a bucket on a boom pole truck about 60 feet in the air,” Watkins said. “We will pull a rope and dump all the balls out into an area. We’ll have a hole there and the ball that gets closest to the hole and in the hole gets $1,000. If there are several in the hole or close, they’ll divide that $1,000. The ball furthest away will get $100.”
The cost is $10 for one golf ball or $25 for 3 golf balls. Participants do not have to be present to win.
Many of the funds raised from the Golf Ball Drop will go toward the completion of the Lions community ball fields project. As always, proceeds will go to the Lions Club and support of the visually impaired.
“We’re very excited,” said President Trey McNair. “We’ve seen a lot of growth, and not only that, but we’re trying to get a lot of stuff done in the community, and all of these things are helping us toward our goal of helping the community. That’s what it’s all about. We’re giving out glasses to people that are in need, we’re building the park — we really do a lot of things. We’ve got a lot of good and exciting stuff going on.”
Roar at the Park will also host several concession stands and bounce houses. Visitors are encouraged to bring a lawn chair and stick around for the fun.
