A Richmond County resident found a Nerf football spray painted gold with a note attached in a plastic bag on Monday. The note said, “Take to the Journal for $500.”
The resident who wishes to remain anonymous said that the football was given to her.
“When I got it, I knew that it probably wasn’t the real one, but I wanted to make sure that someone knew,” she said.
The Daily Journal is running a Golden Football contest, but that wasn’t the ball.
“There is only one official Richmond County Daily Journal Golden Football and it comes with a certificate of authenticity signed by me,” said Rick Bacon, publisher of the Daily Journal.
She went on to say that the fake football was found near an industrial sign next to Cooley Veterinary Hospital located at 464 W US 74 in Rockingham.
The resident doesn’t know when the football was found but thinks it was Saturday or Sunday.
