The Raider frosh are practicing with their high school brethren, and learning to run the same offense the high school uses.
And after several years of fielding two teams, there is one freshman squad this season.
On Thursday, the freshman Raiders got the 2010 season off on the right foot with a 6-0 win over Pinecrest at the Richmond Ninth Grade Academy.
Richmond (1-0) got a 20-yard first-quarter TD run from Travis Singleton.
The freshman Raiders outlasted the freshman Patriots in a defensive struggle the rest of the way.
Richmond had to withstand several late Pinecrest drives to seal the win.
Richmond assistant coach Dustin Braddock said expectations are high for the freshman Raiders, who are deep with 54 players on the roster — more than enough to two-platoon, so no players have to play both ways.
“We’re proud of the kids,” Braddock said.
“It’s always good to get that first win, and it’s even more special when you get it done against Pinecrest,” Braddock added.
The freshman Raiders return to action next Thursday when they travel to Hoke County. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
