With the upcoming Labor Day weekend, Richmond County employees are able to get a little extra vacation time — like it or not.

The Richmond County Administrative offices will be closed on Friday for the employees’ unpaid furlough day and also on Monday for the holiday. The offices will open on Tuesday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The normal office hours are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“This was in response to the recession and the negative impacts it has had on the county budget,” said County Manager Rick Sago.

“County facilities will be shut down for this extra day which also saves utility costs,” Sago said. “Although the loss of pay has certainly been felt by the employees, the extra days off around holidays has been mostly received as a positive way to handle a difficult situation.”

The Richmond County Health Department will be closed on Friday and Monday and will reopen on Tuesday. The normal hours of operation are Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Richmond County Department of Social Services will be closed on Friday and Monday and will reopen on Tuesday, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and on Friday it will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“Some of the clinics will close at 1 p.m. on Thursday,” said Dr. Tommy Jarrell Richmond County Health Department director.

For more information on those clinics, contact the health department at (910) 997-8300. The Department of Motor Vehicles in Hamlet, will be closed on Monday and will reopen on Tuesday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday.

“We won’t be doing driving test after 4 p.m. due to the budget restraints,” said Kimberly Autry, driver’s license examiner. That’s true even if there isn’t a holiday.

The town of Dobbins Heights will be closed on Monday and will reopen on Tuesday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The scheduled garbage pick up days will be Sept. 7 and Sept. 10.

The Richmond County garbage collection sites will be closed Sunday as usual but will also be closed Monday for the Labor Day holiday. The compact site will open on Sept. 7. The hours of operation for the week will be Tuesday through Friday 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

“Those with waste will have to wait until Tuesday morning,” said Debbie Franklin, a secretary.

The Richmond County box sites will be closed on Sunday and Monday and will reopen on Tuesday. The hours will be from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and on Sunday after the holiday they will be open from 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.
