A recent letter by Ron Murray (among many) was very interesting but smacks heavily of ad hominem and not enough fact.
Although slavery was accepted in the United States early on in history it ended long ago, which may come as a surprise to Mr. Murray. The transport of slaves from Africa to the US was stopped in 1808 and in 1865 was officially abolished by a Republican President. Although we should never forget mistakes of the past so as not to repeat them we have too many problems now to dwell on them. We got ourselves into a debacle by electing a president out of compassion and sentiment rather than common sense.
Obama was elected to carry out the wishes of the people but instead he rides rough shod with his own agendas and to make matters worse we currently have a Speaker of the House who has just advocated an investigation into those who exercise their freedom of speech. She was angered at those who question the proposed building of a Muslim Mosque near the site of 9-11 in which 3000 innocent people were murdered by Muslim extremists. Her remark is an insult to those who lost loved ones there. This administration has been the most corrupt and anti-American administration that we have ever had the misfortune to elect.
We were promised openness - we got deals behind closed doors. We were promised unity - we got division like we have never seen before. We were promised a “draining of the swamp” We have corruptness and dirty politics unlike any other (except in Chicago). Be of good cheer, however - November will soon be here and we can actually ‘drain the swamp’ of some of the insanity that has taken over Washington.

Spreading more ignorance I see. The majority of worldwide terrorist acts are carried out by nationalist groups, not Islamic separatists. That's a fact.
Read a book besides the Bible sometime...you might learn something useful. And if you're wondering why I'm going back to the Bible thing, only someone who 'lived' in that house would so easily stereotype the Islamic nation as 'terrorists'. More non-Muslims commit terrorist acts than Muslims by a long shot.
The argument that is made over the wisdom of building a Mosque near ground Zero vs. the right to build is the same argument that can be made about the Glenn Beck and the neo-cons holding a rally on the anniversary of Dr. Kings "I Have a Dream " speech. They have the right to rally but it is totally the wrong place at the wrong time.
You can keep on watching Spiderman with no worries...others will protect your freedom...
I don't even read fiction. My reading material consists of biographies and history.
I am in the process now of reading Karl Rove's 'Courage and Consequences'
And Winston Churchill's 'The Gathering Storm' is a great book, as well It is the history leading up to WW11 It explains how sometimes avoiding pre-emptive action can be detrimental to a nation. Everyone needs to read that one.
I realize that sometimes I inadvertently leave out a word or make mistakes in my writing but I do try to keep my facts straight.
Oh, I do recall watching a grown man read a children's book for several minutes after being informed of the attacks. Odd, that.
The community center will go up, life will go on and you will continue to be able to post your fallacy-based observations on the ol' DJ letters page.
Hamlet, this country has never been in a quandry such as this. Voters didn't have a clue about this man when they voted for him. They are now seeing the real Obama and the more they see the less they like.
Needless to say, the change Obama voters expected has been a complete failure.
It usually takes about ten years after a president leaves office for Americans to realize his accomplishments but with ex- President Bush it took one year for his popularity to began climbing.
I also think there were many sincere people who voted for Obama because they thought it would usher in a post-racial America - something we desperately need, but alas, did not get. This was another thing that Rush was correct about. This administration is obsessed with race.
Many white liberals do experience the guilt complex with respect to blacks because many (not most) view America as an inherently flawed country. So I do think it was a factor; you have to admit there weren't too many other good reasons to vote for him. No experience, history of radical associations, very liberal voting record...voting present 137 times in the Illinois Senate - some courage, huh?
And I said nothing about Obama favoring or disfavoring the mosque
Ditty and DCaudle - the First Amendment even protects ignorant and uninformed speech such as yours...
Gadsden - do I know you?
No one says they don't have the legal right to build there- it's just showing disrespect for those who died in the 9-11 and is an insult to their families
