On Saturday, at 6 p.m. the Back to School Tools Giveaway project will be held in the Cole Auditorium in Hamlet, during the God Get’s the Glory Concert.
Tickets to the concert are available for $10. The school tools supplied are bought with the price of the tickets. The event is being sponsored by the Voices of Evangelism Church of God in Christ. The host pastor is Garcia Morman.
“We have some items, but we need more donations,” Morman said. “What we are trying to do is meet the needs of families who can’t provide the necessary items for their children.”
He says that this is due to the economy.
Joe Brown, general manager of Griffin Chrysler and Jeep in Hamlet, agrees.
“There are a lot of parents with just one income coming in,” he said. “Some parents are struggling.”
Brown went on to say that this is the reason he got involved with the project.
“This type of event is needed,” he said. “I got involved to help the children. I have children of my own.”
Morman is hoping to help a number of children in need in Richmond County.
“I pray that we can service up to 300 families in need,” he said.
Local businesses are pitching in with donations to help out as well.
“I am sure that they could use the items that will be collected,” said Ken Goodman, owner of R W Goodman Company.
Morman believes that by giving the children what they need they will be able to do an effective job.
“We are so excited about this event,” he said. “We have been instrumental in meeting the needs of others.”
Morman went on to say that the donations are tax deductible.
“We will give out forms with our tax identification number provided for tax purposes,” he said.
In the past, Morman has done outreach efforts for the victims of Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Floyd.
“It’s about doing something good in the community,” Goodman said.
