Intimidation or Immigration law?

Dear Editor:

I want to know just what is wrong with trying to stabilize and then control illegal immigration into our country?

Let’s talk Mexico. The violence coming from Mexico into our country should be enough to impose much stricter laws concerning immigration but groups, like the ACLU, want civil rights for people who do not even belong here. There are ways for Mexicans to apply to come here and become citizens, but allowing them to come here for several years, not paying taxes and burdening our welfare system has become too burdensome.

I have worked with many very good Mexican people but have seen more bad things happen due to drug cartels, Mexican gangs and Mafia to decide the bad outweigh the good. When are we going to secure our borders and bring a halt to this invasion? It costs us billions a year just for the programs we know illegals benefit from.

God only knows the costs when it comes to lives lost of American citizens just because a Mexican decides to kill one of our citizens over drugs or just seeing the wrong thing or being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Can I get some opinions?

We are discussing a state law from Arizona that is clearly supported by the majority of its citizens. This law was created due to more intensive problems Arizona has with illegal immigration being a border state. I for one applaud the Arizona citizens. They're finally getting it. We don't have to ask the federal government for permission to create state laws. Everything not covered in the Constitution is left to the citizens and their elected state government to deal with. It's called the tenth amendment and it guarantees them the right to create legislation in their state.

The issue isn't the law though. It's the need for the law. Those at fault in this situation are not the citizens of Arizona or the state government. The fault lies with the federal government, their failure to control illegal immigration, and the illegal immigrants themselves. It's sad that some Americans have to be inconvenienced, but clearly they were already inconvenienced by the effect of illegal immigration on their economy and community. If you look at the crime rate in Arizona you might get a small glimpse into how the Arizona citizens feel about this issue.

nativejustice....If you are a citizen then you have a legal license.I did say that some legals would be PROFILED and that is not right.Cooperation sometimes takes a little more effort than we expect.

The INCONVENIENCE here,to me,is the violence, drugs, and jobs taken by ILLEGALS and also the welfare system that is designed for LEGAL citizens when in need.I'm not in any way trying to be rude at all, just trying to make a point. It should be an inconvenience to you,as a citizen also.

Wesley, not all immigrants are citizens, some are only permanent residents, others are h2a or h2b workers and you're right they should cooperate with the authorities.

The problem is that some citizens will be harassed or asked for papers just because they look a certain way.

I am an American citizen, born in Richmond county but I have been asked to show proof of my citizenship on several occasions. I should not have to tote my birth certificate around with me every where that I go it is an inconvenience.

Hamletresident......I agree with your post.YES,it DOES make all the sense in the world, unfortunately that would be too simple.Seems like, with the terrorist and drug mafia threat you spoke of,that the Gov't. would go ahead and invest in infrastructeure projects such as a big as* WALL and more officers to patrol it.Also, you are right about LEGAL immigrants being profiled. That's why I mentioned the LEGALS cooperating with law officers to help. They are, after all, citizens too.

Something we're saying must be right because you and I hardlt agree on anything and it is nice to be able to actually discuss a situation like this with you or anyone and have agreements.Thank you Hamletresident.

There would be no confusion whatsoever if governments would allow its individuals the freedoms provided in the Constitution.

The Constitution of this great nation provides the rich, poor, white, ethnics the same privileges. When the wealthy is allowed to trample those rights everyone suffers - when the poor trample those rights everyone suffers.

This administration and many before have sold the rights of the individual to get the vote.

Politics is dirty: If the not so rich voters outnumber the wealthy, politicians will take the rights of the wealthy and give to the not so wealthy. If the wealthy outnumber the not so wealthy they cater to the wealthy. Everyone should have the same rights. Our Constitution demands it and so does our Bible - covetousness is prohibited

Wezley I agree with the main points of your letter, which I interrupted to be that something needs to be done about the problem of illegal immigrants entering our country in the southwest (Az. and other states). I have family in Az. and I know there is a real problem. Our government has failed to deal with this problem for at least the last ten years, probably longer. I really have a lot of sympathy for the citizens of these states.

The other side of the coin is that this problerm did not start yesterday and unfortunately the state of Az. has chosen to deal with the problem in a way that is going to be discerning to many LEGAL immigrants. Some second and third generation legal Mexical and Central Americans are going to be harassed. This leaves police departments such as Tuson wide open for being the object of legal actions against their departments. The Chief of Police of Tuson said this on TV. Parts of this new law are illegal, cut and dry! Why put our police depts. in this position?

It is too bad that the government has not done more to prosecute employers of illegal immigrants. After all, that is why they are in this country to start with. Make these employers keep records available of all employees who are not born in the US. Are't they required to keep SS records of employees? A lot of the problem goes back to greedy employers who hire these people for 1/3 the wages of the local population. They know they are illegal and do it anyway.

The second reason we need to clean up the border is for the sake of our National Security. The easiest way to enter this country is to walk (not swim) across the Rio Grande. Think about how easy it is for a terrorist (as well as drug dealer) to fly into Mexico and pay someone to take him across the border. Here we are spending untold millions to scrutinize who comes into this country by air and the Mexican border is the easiest possible access. Doesn't this make sense to you?

Dear Editor: I have to apologize for not reading the whole text of your post. But, when I was in college I got into the habit of quietly leaving the classroom whenever one of the professors would launch into a tirade over the subject of plagiarism and classroom decorum. After I left the class a few times they got my message that because I was not guilty, the information did not apply to me so I did not want to hear it.The same thing happened with your post, I knew I did not use bad language so I quit reading the post. My fault, so in the future I will try to read all the text.

I Sorry tell if I gave you the impression that I thought you were incapable of understanding. I find you very knowledgable on most subjects.

Dear Editor, Bonnie and Kevin1, I am quite capable of reading comprehension. I am also clear now about what you wrote. What I don't understand is why you had to write 13 paragraphs about a subject that could have been conveyed in two complete sentences. It took nine paragraphs to post the message about letters to the editor, while the first subject was about posts on the website.

Dear Editor,

The letters provided below in the are you human part are very difficult for me to read....even with my glasses. How about some color....it looks white on white to me.

Publisher's note:

They are hard to read. We don't control that portion of the site. You might try the 'audio' option to see if that works for you.

Dear Editor, I guess that when you implemented the new policy that it did not include a certain person from Andrews,SC. The person addressed the post to me and not the readers. Please clarify your policy and who it affects.

Publisher's note:

LETTERS must be addressed to the editor and our readers in general.

POSTS were not included in the policy.

In the times in which we live, I'm not surprised that you suspect a conspiracy.

Are we clear now?

Telltales - At the time Ronald Reagan was president we didn't have that many here and they were not receiving money out of our pockets to live here freely. They worked - I repeat - we should implement the same immigration restrictions that are already in effect in Mexico and other nations.

Those who come here should be in a position to add something to our economy - not drain it.

How dare they protest in our streets while accepting the strict rules of their own country.

They always have the option of returning to their native lands.

Dear Editor: When Ronald Reagan signed into law in 1986 an amnesty bill that gave citizenship to about 1.7 million illegal people and anoter 1 million Green Cards and a path to citizenship this was done to solve our illegal immigration problem. Whenthe bill was signed there was an estimated 5 million illegals in our country. Now the estimate is around 12 million, so it no stretch to assume that if amnesty is again given, then we will have 20 million invade our country. There is no need for us to worry about how other countries do or do not handle their illegal immigration. There is only the need for our country to enforce the existing laws.

To Journal Staff....I don't blame you all a bit.I have sent many comments to be posted and when they sometimes are NOT posted,I understand that I too it too far and need to clean it up.Once again,I apologize for my part in any type of post that has NOT met the Daily Journal standards.

I believe the same thing Ms.Wheeler...If someone from a foreign country enters in our country without proper approval and paperwork, they have already, essentially, broken Federal Law.I want so badly to sympathize with those Mexican illegals that come here, work hard and contribute to our society productively but when I see reports of NARCO drug cartels killing our citizens over dope,my sympathetic affinity diminishes towards the Mexican illegals. What is sad is that even Legal immigrants from Mexico are suffering because of situations just like I just talked about and it seems that we cross the line and profile ALL Mexicans as potential drug dealing ,gang affiliated murderers which is wrong.

I came to this conclusion ,as a matter of my own opinion, that until illegal immigration is stabilized from Mexico, that we should ask those Mexican legals to cooperate when asked for proof of citizenship. It would help in the search for those illegals and I believe they should be fingerprinted and deported.Does that sound immoral or maybe over the line to you Ms.Wheeler or anyone who is reading this?

The Obama administration is half-heartedly attempting to participate in our illegal immigration problem and to focus on those committing crimes against different states they may live in.I guess the fact that entering the country illegally will be overlooked as long as they "keep their" noses clean while they do whatever it is they are doing here.I think ALL illegalsa should be deported including the children they procreated while here. Our border patrols should be quadrupled, and forcefull repelling at the borders should be allowed, within ethical standards of course.

Has anyone noticed that you have to look for the ENGLISH directions on anythiung we buy now??More power to the Mexican population that are here legally but I think the illegals should"RUN FOR THE BORDER" so to speak!!

Thanks to ALL of you that have posted comments,it has helped me with my thought process on this situation.

Just received this; "The Obama administration has said its priority is to focus on those illegal immigrants who engage in crime or are otherwise dangerous. Government lawyers said Arizona was attempting to enforce its own immigration policy”

Thought-those that are illegally here are-drum roll please-breaking the law!!!! Every nation in the world has laws on who comes, goes and stays on their soil!! It is illegal to be an illegal alien!! A simple concept!! Note, judge is clear in words-Federal laws and needs pre-empt needs of communities. Will Arizona now have the guts to defy federal judges? With Dems and Repubs in office, the answer is a high likely no! Both big box parties are in it for money and votes, status quo"

Wezley - I agree that we are in dire need of controlling our borders - I believe we should impose the same rules for entering this nation that Mexico has. If one is caught entering Mexico illegaloly, he goes to jail or is deported. Also if one is allowed into Mexico legally he must be well able to support himself. He gets no welfare check or food stamps. Why can't our government use the same common.
