ASHEBORO — The Rockingham Pony All-Star team came here Wednesday afternoon looking to advance to the championship round of the Pony district tournament.

Rockingham moved one step closer to a regional tournament title, beating High Point No. 1, 15-2.

The story of the night was the long ball, as Rockingham belted three home runs in the bottom of the third inning to take the lead after being down 2-0.

Elijah Goodwin once again paced the offense, with help from James Buie, John Simmons and Tyler McLean.

Goodwin was 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, three RBI’s and a homer. Buie was 2-for-3 with a stolen base and three RBIs and John Simmons was 2-for-3 with one RBI and four stolen bases.

Simmons is now 4-for-5 in the tournament, after a 2-for-2 showing in Tuesday’s game.

Offensively, Rockingham started out sluggish, but once its bats started to heat up in the bottom of the third, Rockingham didn’t look back.

Starting pitcher James Buie looked shaky in the top of the first as he allowed a two-run home run for High Point to take the early lead.

Buie then went on to pitch a complete game, allowing just two earned runs and striking out nine.

Rockingham will look to win the tournament tonight in Asheboro, where they will have the possibility of facing High Point once again.

Mustang Rockingham 10, SW Randolph 5

ARCHDALE — The Rockingham Mustang All-stars came one step closer to a tournament title on Wednesday night, advancing to the semifinals.

Rockingham started out with three singles by Myles Rohleader, Ryley Wilson and Johnathan Lee before a double by Jack Webb sent all three runners home.

Houston Hayden drove in Webb, pushing the lead to 4-0, Rockingham.

Southwest Randolph answered back with four runs over the first two innings.

Rockingham started to pull away with two runs in each of the third fourth innings, scoring two runs in each inning, and one in the top of the sixth. S. W. Randolph was only able to score one more run to finish the game by a score of 10-5.

Rockingham was again aggressive on the basepaths, swiping 11 bases.

Starter Myles Rohleader allowed four runs in two innings of work before yielding to Webb, who turned in a gem for Rockingham over the final four innings.

Webb allowed one run, one hit, and struck out seven.

Rockingham will be in action again Friday night at 6 p.m. at Creekside Park in Archdale. They will face the winner of the Garner and Jamestown game slated for tonight.

Jamestown 19, Rockingham 9

rileyjr, the reason is that Rockingham and Hamlet teams play for different youth baseball organizations. I know that Rockingham has been with Pony baseball for at least 30 years maybe more. Hamlet used to be with Pony a couple of times and now are with Cal Ripken(which is affliated with Babe Ruth).Several of the surrounding counties have also been with Pony in the past but for whatever reason they changed. Sometimes it is because they don't like particular rules of an organization or maybe they just want to try something else. Ellerbe is or used to with Dixie Youth baseball which has diiferent rules than Pony or Ripken. So you see it is what ever organization tickles your fancy.

Thank you Travisa. I looked at the website but I guess the question I am asking is why does Rockingham not play the same baseball as Laurinburg, Southern Pines, Sanford, and other local counties. It seems that they would draw better crowds with closer counties. I know baseball is baseball but I have read the coverage of the local baseball and I just had a question.

I don't know how the Cal Ripken tournament is done, but Chatham is up near Asheboro, and with the Pony League you have different regions that play, and when the tournament comes around the comittee decides where the tournament is at. Their website is www.pony.org

First of all, I hope any team from Richmond County wins any baseball game they play. Just one question, who are these teams the Rham all stars play? Why do the Hamlet teams play teams from Scotland, Moore, Lee, Chatham, Robeson counties. It seems like all stars should have to play more teams from surrounding counties before playing someone from far away. I think the Hamlet all star teams get to really see who is the best in the area, just like middle school and high school ball. Call me crazy.
