But when the Junior Raiders came to bat, they more than compensated. Richmond scored seven runs in the bottom of the first inning and added eight more in the second en route to a 15-2 drubbing of Overhills in a Central Carolina Summer Scholastic League contest halted after five innings due to the 10-run rule.
The second game of the night's scheduled doubleheader — a CCSSL game between Richmond and Scotland — was suspended in the bottom of the third inning due to lightning. That contest will be resumed where it left off Thursday afternoon at 5 p.m.
In the earlier junior game, a two-out defensive lapse by Richmond allowed the Overhills runs to score.
But the Junior Raiders were more than up to the challenge on this muggy summer night. In the seven-run first inning, key hits included an RBI double by Cody Wilson and a two-RBI double by Mark Thayer.
Richmond added eight more runs in the second. The Junior Raiders got a two-RBI single from C.J. James and a two-RBI double from Kole Stanley.
Nic Bullard earned the win with three solid innings of work. Chandler Fann came in to pitch a scoreless final two innings. The Junior Raiders (8-4) return to action tonight when they host Lumberton at 5 p.m.
