Heritage yes, not tresspassing

I have recently seen signs and window stickers in Richmond County that read, “Support dog hunting, say yes to our southern heritage.”

Some questions come to mind. What is this sign trying to relay to the reader? Which dog hunting sport is asking for support? Why would I say yes or no to my southern heritage?

The issue and debates concerning dog hunting in Richmond County is about deer hunting with dogs. Not rabbit, coon, squirrel, bird or any other dog hunting sport that I can think of. This sign, to me and maybe others, seems to imply that it is grouping all dog hunting sports together. And, as far as my southern heritage, my ancestors settled in North Carolina nearly 300 years ago. They were some of the early Scottish settlers who wanted land for their families and also wanted to live a peaceful and religious life.

I consider that my southern heritage. A life lived in peace on the land that I reside and not be bothered by trespassing and hunters who impose their sport on me and my family. So, if I say Yes to my southern heritage and it means supporting deer hunting using dogs, then I will have to say no.

I don't hunt, but I can say I know the problem hunters and land owners are having,it all about still hunting clubs on big farms don't want dogs going thru their property, but stopping the sport of dog hunting is not the answer.its either teach the dogs to read posted signs or put up a fence.as for my rules on still hunting should be put before the legislation is no hunting over bait, and no hi caliber guns, that shoot 7 miles, and last but not least, you got to be 12 ft off the ground, and ages 16 to 50 will be the only ages to use climbing stands.sounds fair to me.

Good Letter! And don't any of you come back with that stuff about thinning out the animal population so they want starve to death! Just how many pictures do you see in the paper of red neck hunters with their heap big guns and an sick old deer with his antlers broken off? Nature weeds out the sick and the old! You go out to kill the prime of the species!!!!!!!!!!!Man is the only creature God ever put on earth that kills strictly for pleasure and we are suppose to be so far above the animal kindom intellectually!!!!!!!!!!!!! So much for how smart hunters are!

looking4ten?...LMMFAO!!!You may not be to blame;maybe it's genetic..Sounds like your family tree has NO branches, know what I mean??You see,I am a very experienced hunter and have hunted all types of game including squirrels..for food. There is no sport in hunting and those who kill animals for bragging rights are the ones who are "mindlessly ignorant".I can't believe anyone actually hunts a 2pound squirrel with a dog and would justify it.

farming3...Let me guess...you hunt squirrels with a feist, right??You and looking4ten must be related..let me see...I know, you two have to be kin on your Uncle Dad's side right??

key words here are NOT population control ...should be birth control!!!

Kevin?? be careful 'bout spitt'in dat "backer"jewse roun dem boys;heard their favorite movie is Deliverance!!"Squeel like a pig boy!!"

Sport=competition between two willing and equally matched participants. Once again deer, squirrels, rabbits or whatever don't know they are playing. Therefore hunting is not a sport.

Just wonder if you hunt or know anything about hunting. You made yourself sound really uneducated on the subject. Do yourself a favor, and research squirrel hunting.

You don't know anything about hunting either, apparently. It's largely about population control and is regulated as such. And, maybe you're a Yankee living down south?

Well guys, fact is, hunting is a sport, just as much as competition shooting of any weapon is(some of which are olympic games). In response to who hunts squirrels with dogs, there are a lot of people who hunt and raise squirrel dogs. I suppose since you are mindlessly ignorant and havent come to terms with the world outside of your bubble, you have never heard of Mt. Curs, Blackmouth Curs, or the various Treeing Feist strains that are used to hunt squirrels. Hunting is nowhere near "murder" as you insinuate, and to compare the two is absurd. Hunting requires skill, and is also fair chase and is legal. It is a way to control animal populations and manage them for the future. Murder of another person is not even close. Also, southern heritage is celebrating the legacy of the southern US, not "hillbilly redneckery." This includes the traditions and culture of the people who live here. Obviously you guys aren't educated since you have the grammar skills of the average fifth grader, and are clearly ignorant of the world in which we live. Maybe you folks are practicing some "hillbilly redneckery" of your own?

Wow, Kev and I agree on something, hunting isn't a sport, it's either food-gathering or if not, then it's fairly close to murder. What the heck is a southern heritage and why would anyone want to celebrate hillbilly redneckery?

No big backlash here, but hunting is a sport. And, when you get dogs involved in it, it is an even bigger event.

I might be in the minority here but oh well. Why is deer hunting considered a sport? The deer don't even know they are playing.
