About 220 workers were left out of a job when London-based plastic firm Rexam announced it would close its facility in Hamlet at the end of 2009, but Richmond County’s economic development team landed another suitor to run the plant in about four months.

Gov. Bev Perdue came to call April 12, the day the Pennsylvania-based Plastek Group announced it would expand into Richmond County. She called it a “red letter for Hamlet and a red letter day for Richmond County.”

The Plastek Group is a family-owned business started in 1956 in Eerie, Pa. by Joseph Prischak, which employs four of his sons.

The company plans to bring 250 jobs and a $19 million in investment to Richmond County over the next three years,. It will provided plastic packaging for deodorant sticks and other products at the Hamlet facility.

The jobs are expected to pay an average salary of $32,800.

“The location in North Carolina is very important in making this happen,” Plastek Vice President of Manufacturing Daniel Prischak said after the announcement. “From a financial aspect, the incentives and tax credits we received were also extremely important.”

Prischak continued to say “we think very highly of Hamlet and of Richmond County,” which are strategically placed close to its major customers .

The state used a $250,00 grant for facility upgrades and up to $1.9 million in potential tax breaks over the next nine years to lure the company to Hamlet.

The tax breaks will depend on the company meeting quotas for hiring and employees’ salaries.

The training capabilities of Richmond Community College, the opportunity to expand and the quality of the Richmond County workforce were also cited as reasons to relocate in Hamlet.

“This company understands quality, and that’s part of what makes this such a great for Richmond County,” Gov. Perdue said.

During the formal announcement, Prischak lauded the family values of the company.

“Family is very important to us,” he said. “We believe it’s a good way to run a business, and you get to spend a lot of time with your family. I shared an office with my grandfather. Family is very important to our business.”
