Dr. Alan Coulson has passed the hyperbaric certification exam of the American College of Hyperbaric Medicine.

“Passing this exam confers special competency via a Certificate of Added Qualification in Hyperbaric Medicine,” said Jeffrey A. Niezgoda, M.D., president of the American College of Hyperbaric Medicine.

“Your certification by our organization signals to the community that you have expended considerable time and effort to become proficient in the application of hyperbaric techniques in medical care,” Niezgoda said.

“Members of the ACHM board of directors appreciate the active interest of dedicated professionals as it strives to meet its goal of promoting the development of the specialty of hyperbaric medicine,” he said.

An important part of that work involves developing a greater understanding of the potential benefit of hyperbaric treatments and sharing information about their current use.

Hyperbaric medicine is the use of 100 percent pressurized oxygen to treat patients’ wounds. The patient lies in a special chamber for 1 1/2 hours a day, and can sleep or watch TV during treatment.

Coulson, a general and vascular surgeon at Sandhills Regional Medical Center, also works at the Sandhills Center for Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Medicine. He is quickly rising through the ranks as an advanced wound care specialist.

Last year, he was named a member and a Fellow of the American College of Hyperbaric Medicine, one of only 23 fellows in the state at that time, and also received his wound care certification.

Hazel Seibles, program director for the wound care center, said Dr. Coulson has been a tremendous asset to the clinic.

“He’s very quiet and unassuming, but is always trying to gain more knowledge,” she said.

“For him, the learning never stops. He is always trying to learn something new about wound care.”

The Sandhills Center for Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Medicine is located at 108 Endo Lane, Suite 2, Hamlet, and accepts self-referrals. It offers advanced treatment for hard-to-heal wounds and houses two hyperbaric chambers. For more information, call (910) 205-1525.
