FAYETTEVILLE — The Richmond junior and senior summer baseball teams rolled into Fayetteville on Monday afternoon looking to bounce back from the latest losses. Neither the heat, nor the long trip could keep the Raider squads from doing just that.

The Junior Raiders took the field first at 4 p.m., and wanted to set the tone for the afternoon against the Junior Colts.

The heat on the field translated to hot bats, to give the Junior Raiders their best offensive performance in their summer schedule. They would push six runs across the plate in the top of the first inning, and would never let Cape Fear closer than four runs.

The Raiders offense’ went silent over the next three innings, but in the top of the fifth, the offense once again found its stride and scored six more runs to secure the 12-2 victory over the Junior Colts.

Bradley Brown, Cole Stanley, Drew Butler, Mark Thayer, J.T. Taylor, and Adam Sweat all pitched in to the offensive display, each with an RBI. Taylor drove in two runs.

Alex Norton picked up the win on the mound, pitching four innings, allowing two runs, and striking out three Colt batters.

Six errors helped the Junior Raider cause. The Junior Raiders improved to 4-3.

In the second game of the afternoon, the Richmond senior players wanted to continue the momentum that the junior team started in the first game.

The Raiders were unable to score a run in the first inning, but would get their bats in gear later and take the second game, 6-2 to complete the sweep.

Peter Howe, who had a dominant performance on the mound, pitched four innings, gave up one hit, allowed two runs (one earned), and struck out five Colts.

With the Raiders trailing by one run going into the top of the second, a wild pitch by Justin Robinson allowed Alex Dockery to score the tying run.

Dockery had one RBI and a stolen base for the Raiders (5-2).

Howe and Ty Bostick both drew walks after a groundout by Austin Brower, but a sacrifice fly by Nathan Cain allowed Howe to score the go-ahead run.

In the fourth inning, the Raiders again pushed a run across the plate, with a home run over the center field wall by Austin Brower to push the lead to 3-1.

However, the Colts would not go away quietly, scoring a run on an error by the Raiders to pull within one run at 3-2.

The Colts defense was also plagued with errors in the top of the seventh, and the Raiders were able to capitalize, scoring three more runs to seal the victory.

Luke Bullard worked the final three innings on the mound for the Raiders, allowing two hits and striking out three to finish the game.

Both teams return to action today at Midway. The Junior Raiders’ game begins at 4:30 p.m., with the senior squad to follow at 7 p.m.
