The veteran organizations in Richmond County have decided to hold a function Saturday, June 26, at the Lions Park in Hamlet to Welcome the Vietnam veterans home.

As you probably know, it has been 30-35 years since the end of hostilities in Vietnam. A large number of the Vietnam veterans became disillusioned or disassociated themselves from society, moved into the wilderness and tried to exist with their problems after Vietnam.

I served during that time and I can sympathize with the Vietnam veterans’ plight.

After all the years have passed, finally Richmond County is going to feed them a meal and welcome them home. This event will begin at noon.

Richmond County as an entity did not participate in the long overdue welcome home to the Vietnam veterans. VFW Post 4203 in Rockingham, Am-Vets Post 316 and VVA Chapter 1022 "picked up the ball". Volunteers were requested from the Richmond County Sheriffs Dept., City of Hamlet Manager's Office, the office of VA assistance in Rockingham and there was no response. Again, Perdue and Cheerwine provided assistance as did the Main Street Cafe, Food Lion and Meritta.

So Ms. Wheeler, take back your misspelled "kudos" for "RC". It seems the county was once again too self-absorbed. I would like to add that the veterans enjoyed themselves. The food and music was the BEST thanks to the efforts of the guys BBQ from the State Championship cook-off and the musicians who suffered the temperatures. Do us all a favor and quit "spitting" on the good things we are trying to accomplish. As you are so found of pointing out to us "get YOUR facts right" before you present it for the public eyes.

Thanks to the Vietnam Veterans who did their duty for love of their country and all they want is for their country to love them back. Bless you guys and welcome home!!

Bonnie, please name one veteran spat on by Jane Fonda. I have never in my life time read such hate filled writings from anyone, you out hate all the other hate-mongers. I remember the Vets returning home just like other Vets before them and they were not "spat" on by Jane Fonda or any others in Richmond County. You, I fear have been drinking too much "tea" with the tea-party.But one thing we can agree on, they do deserve a welcome by the public.
