Apologize to people of the gulf

As we continue to deal with the worst man made environmental disaster in U.S. history, one would think U.S. Representatives would stand up for the people.

Unfortunately, many in the Republican Party continue to be apologist for the very corporations responsible for the massive oil spill in the Gulf. Thursday, Rep. Joe Barton apologized to BP saying, “I apologize, I do not want to live in a county where anytime a citizen or a corporation does something that is legitimately wrong, (it is) subject to some sort of political pressure that, again, in my words, amounts to a shakedown.”

How about, “BP will compensate all the residents of the Gulf whose lives and livelihood have been destroyed by BP.”

When a company does something legitimately wrong, what should happen? How long should BP have to pay up? What consequences should BP face? Should we continue to allow BP to handle this mess? Why do large corporations work under a different set of laws than the majority of Americans?

Is this the American way, or the American Dream? Why would any representative of the people apologize to the corporation responsible for the biggest oil spill in American history? How about an apology to the people of the Gulf Coast, further, an apology to America for the reckless energy policies leading up to this catastrophe!

Currently, BP gets billions upon billions in federal contracts, yet no one is calling for an end to these contracts. Instead, Republicans continue to defend failed energy policies and the beneficiaries of these policies while criticizing President Obama for brokering a win for the American people. If putting aside $20 billion for the costs of cleanup and compensation is wrong, I would rather be wrong than “right.”

Bonnie, in South Carolina you do not register as a Democrat or Republican it has open primaries. If you are still registered as a Democrat in Richmond County NC then you are violating the law. This was established when Strom was a Dixiecrat and switched to the Republican party because of segregation, which he supported. Many of the Southern Democrats switched to the Republican Party because they favored segregation which was a mainstay of the Republican party.

Bonnie, you do throw opinion out there and call it fact. I check the things you throw out there, and when you are right, I admit it. However, it is unusual to find supporting "facts" to uphold what you call "fact" which is why I had such a hard time believing you when you stated the Obama admin had yet to waive the Jones act to allow foreign ships in to help.

It's like the boy who cries wolf, people have a hard time believing anything you say when you stretch the truth and alternate fact and opinion with such recklessness.

Dittybopper - Go back and check, I have never used the words 'This is just my opinion' after the fact. I include them with every post I write when it is 'just my opinion.'

Still grasping at straws, huh? I wish you all were as eager to learn the facts as you are at defending a prty. When I was a Democrat and I still might be because I have made no effort to change my status, I voted for the same principles that I vote for now. I'm hoping that we will soon get back to those principles. that was before drugs hit the scene.

Geee, you are so biased. You would have accepted everything George Bush did and would have been proud of him if he had only been Democrat

As much as it hurts my inner child to say this.... Bonnie is actually correct about the foreign aid. Obama has yet to waive the Jones Act which would allow foreign ships to work this close to the coast of the US. I can't tell you how truly disappointed I was while reading this, I checked the story from multiple sources, and it's true.

I sent letters to my representative, senators and the president about this situation. The Obama admin seriously dropped the ball on this one, and it's imperative to our coast for skimmers and supertankers to CLEAN UP THE OIL!!!!!!!

I also read about the insane amount of BP safety violations still going on right now. Whistle blowers are coming out of the woodwork, many refusing to be on camera because they fear being fired. The Obama Admin has some issues in the handling of this oil spill, issues that make me truly angry, but I am under no illusion of who to blame. BP is to blame for this mess and we should never apologize or feel sorry for them!

Sorry Bonnie, I really thought this was another box of Fox lies.

Bonnie writes, "Attacking one personally displays your lack of information to support your claims."

Bonnie makes up facts and then says, "I just quote facts. Show me where I'm wrong."

When you show her it's "well that's no big deal.. it was just my opinion."

Her opinion is always Obama is evil and the worst president ever... etc.

But that's not attacking one personally because in her 'attack dog' Republican world it is justified.

She lives in South Carolina so she should understand when we yell, "YOU LIE."

Bonnie, Bonnie,Bonnie,

You do exaggerate to support your lies. You say Bush called the governor 4 times during Katrina? Bush was on a month long vacation in Crawford, Texas. Cheney was vacationing in Wyoming and the sec of state, Condi Rice was vacationing in New York when Katrina hit the gluf. I do not expect you to take my word. Look it up. Actually, Bush was golfing on Tuesday when the broken leeves were discovered, and confirmed the day before. Bush was given video up dates from the very beginning.

Bush was informed of the state of emergency warnings that were started on Aug 26. He assured state officials "we are fully prepared" then lied on Sept 3 that no state of emergency was declared. Bush made no calls for national unity, no one explained the state of things, no buses, boats or helicopters were dispatched because our top leaders were absent.

Finally, Aug 30 Bush gave a so-called-speech to explain why he was going to continue fighting in Iraq:protect the country's vast oil fields from terrorists. He also mentioned that he had cut his vacation short to oversee the fed gov'tment response to Katrina. The next day he made a 35 minute fly over the devastation at a distance of 2500ft.

I think is is sad that, our gov'tment was fore-warned about this disaster and yet the response by the gov't was inadequate to say the least...no command and no control established.

Bush's address came across as uncaring and making light of the situation. Then a few days later, Mrs Bush in a patronizing statement referring to the refugees said "...and so many of these people...were underprivileged anyway...so this is working very well for them." Around 1840 people died in the wake of Katrina and when they are faced with another catastrophe, you complain because the culprits are held accountable and you complain that Pres Obama did not react yet he did and that was not good enough. Bonnie, even if he had pitched a tent on the shore when it happened, you would have complained of a government take over of a private business. It was obvious that you did not care for this president long before he became the Commander-in Chief.

You have made it your "personal war" to slander and demonize the president. I do not agree with everything he does, nor did I agree with everything Bush did but I would never have disrespected Bush the way you and others have done and continue to belittle pres Obama. What's in the water in South Carolina? The mere fact that he is our president should afford him some respect. It is sad the picture that we, Americans paint for the world but I continue to pray for you, Bonnie and all the rest of us because I know there is a God and he is THE JUDGE.

Bonnie, I'm still waiting for the source of "Obama rejected 13 countries offering help"... it really gets sticky for you when you're asked for a source.

I'm busy right now, but I will certainly get back to the propaganda machine shortly.

There Bonnie goes again... rewriting history.

Bonnie writes "He has not even conducted prayer on the 'Day of Prayer' yet - the first president in history not to do so."

Here's the story via CNN:

(CNN) -- For the past eight years, the White House recognized the National Day of Prayer with a service in the East Room, but this year, President Obama decided against holding a public ceremony.

President Bush marked the National Day of Prayer with a service at the White House.

Now from Wikipedia:

Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush each hosted special events for the day only once during their administrations, President Bill Clinton did not hold any such events during his time in office, George W. Bush held events on the National Day of Prayer in each year of his presidency, and President Barack Obama did not hold a formal event for the NDOP on May 7, 2009.[14

So, Bonnie, every president in history has done it?

Reagan once in eight years and HW once.. Clinton not at all. Not sure about Nixon, Ford or Carter, but that doesn't stop Bonnie.

Bonnie you just can't help but tell the story that best suits your hatred of Obama. You do know you go to hell for lying, don't you?

Hamlet- there were mistakes made by all-however, Feds did respond with busses.

http://www.snopes.com/katrina/photos/buses.asp

and they furnished no one to drive-I rmember one African American who had no lisence grabbed one of the busses and saved lives. However, no one involved knew this levy was going to break.

Dee, For one thing, this is no time to be partying and another reason this is against the acto of homosexuality is against the religious belief of the majority - Obama should keep the White House out of controversial situations such as this.

He has not even conducted prayer on the 'Day of Prayer' yet - the first president in history not to do so. Is it your belief that all the down through the ages had it all wrong?

Dana, the administration actually need to apologize to the American people

They have quietly admitted, after two months that America needs foreign help to handle the oil spill — Look at the damage that has already been done in those two months - Just because Obama did not do as George Bush did during Katrina and waiver the 'Jones Act'

If we don't manage somehow to impeach this man and get him out of office, along with Reid and Pelosi, there will be nothing to go back to that is anywhere near what this Country was founded on.

Amidst all this tragedy, Obama is planning another White House party. This one is for gays and lesbians.

Bonnie your account of Katrina is a ball face lie! Three states were affected by Katrina. Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. Exactly which governor are you referring to? Are you implying that the governors of all three states were incompetent and did not ask for help?At the end of four days there had been no help from the Federal Government to any of these states (CNN NEWS) There was a CNN reporter reporting from the coast of Miss (her hometown), and other towns in the area. NO FEDERAL HELP HAD ARRIVED!

I live approx. 60 miles from Bragg. I have driven from Hamlet to the Miss. River in one day. A group of soldiers from Bragg could have driven to Mississippi in one day! Not to mention helicopters that were available to them.

It was neglect pure and simple on the part of George Bush. His wife even made derogatory remarks about the people who lost their homes. When someone made the statement to Laura Bush that these people had everything that they owned her reply was that they didn't own anything to start with! History will never forget nor forgive Geo.Bush for the atrocities that he committed while president and neither will I forget or forgive him or the republican party.

You are really a pathetic case! Anyone who has lived as long as you have and learned absolutely no compassion for people and choose to spend the rest of their existence spreading political propaganda for the republican party really has a sick mind! The only possible reason for this would be that you are paid by the republican party to do so! Yes I have said it in the past and I will say it again. You are an arrogant ole bigot.

Dana, I appreciate your point of view, but I think you last point clearly makes my point. First, the person appointed by OBAMA to administer this money is not a disinterested third party, it is his pay czar. You make my point by relying on your point of the inefficiencies of the judiciary branch, but you still have no constitutional basis for a President to inform a public company that they will be setting aside money. This used to be called emminent domain, but here there is no basis for the grab for money.

I think you miss my point that having Eric Holder in the negotiations on how this fund was created was a big mistake. The AG's job is to prosecute Criminal and Civil actions against BP, not to negotiate a fund for claims, where there is no legal basis.

Unfortunately for some, our legal basis is based on the courts, not based on the whims of the President and some pop culture that thinks we should seed all power to the executive branch, even when you admit he is wrong. This is bad precedent for America. In the end, BP probably would have been more efficient at paying the claims rather than the Chicago mafia.

Bush sent out several calls to the governor and she failed to react when Katrina occurred. They were not expecting the levy to break, however, being there, they knew the dangers and should have acted accordingly. He was blamed for not going over their heads.

Dana - Do you not think that companies would utilize alternative fuels today if it were cost-effective? You want an immediate transition to fuels that would bankrupt any company making the decision with today's technology. I have no special interest in oil. I own no oil stocks. Your line of thinking would deepen our current economic woes. But you wouldn't care about the millions of Americans affected as long as you could "stick it to the oil companies." Who, by the way, provide an invaluable service to our entire economy. Geesssh, you're a shallow thinker...
