It’s early in the Central Carolina Summer Scholastic League season. But the Richmond senior squad is looking pretty solid.
Tuesday night at Raider Field, the Raiders rallied from a 2-0 deficit to down Pinecrest, 3-2 and improve to 2-0 on the young 2010 campaign.
That 2-0 Pinecrest lead came in the early innings, and excellent pitching by Peter Howe and Luke Bullard helped keep the Raiders in the game until Richmond could score some runs.
The Raiders broke onto the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth with two outs.
Alex Dockery singled and stole second. He came home on an Austin Brower single and the Raiders had drawn to within one at 2-1.
In the bottom of the fifth, Howe led off with a single, and Ryan Mercer sacrificed him to second.
Jordan Tucker was hit by a pitch and a walk loaded the bases. Bullard drew a walk to force in the tying run. Dockery then hit into a fielder’s choice, beating out the relay from second to allow the go-ahead run to score.
Bullard was able to hold off the Patriots the rest of the way, with two strikeouts sandwiched around a pair of walks in the top of the seventh to make things interesting. Bullard got a groundout to end the game.
“Peter and Luke both pitched well,” said Richmond coach Ricky Young. “We’re off to a nice start.”
Richmond returns to action on Friday night when the Raiders will host Purnell Swett. First pitch is slated for 7 p.m.
