Dog hunters use scare tactics

As a still hunter in the western part of the county, I am disgusted by the nonsense and complete disregard of landowner rights by deer dog hunters. After reading responses online to previous letters to the editor on this issue, I am convinced that most deer dog hunters are plainly ignorant of anything that goes on in reality.

One reader posted, “there are not many still hunters anymore, that is a thing of the past.”

This is possibly the most stupid statement I have ever read or heard by anyone in my life. About 99 percent of deer hunters in this country are still hunters. There are only nine states where dogs are used to hunt deer, and in most, North Carolina included, it is only partially legal. In fact, since Irish immigrants brought this sport to the colonies in the early 1700’s, there has been constant trouble, including the first bannings of it in the mid 1800’s.

I don’t care how many tracking collars you put on your dog, it is apparently impossible to keep them off my property. I have been shot at by dog hunters, as well as have deer killed on my property by dog hunters every year.

Before you say that I hate hunting dogs in general, I love to coon and rabbit hunt with dogs. In doing both, I have never had a dog leave my property, and there lies the difference in these hunting forms. Now, dog hunters are attempting scare tactics to keep their sport. Threats of increased trespassing and lies about how deer populations will increase with a ban are pathetic. Still hunting clubs kill lots of deer. Dog hunters kill only a minuscule fraction of deer in this country. I simply pity the ignorance of deer dog hunters.

It's a shame that dog runners just don't get it. The sport is a thing of the past simply because there isn't enough land to practice this type of hunting. Landowners are fed up with trespassing and infringing on the hunting privileges of the landowner himself. If a landowner can't go to his own stand on his own property at any given time to hunt without being interrupted by a pack of dogs running through, you can believe there is going to be trouble. It's plain and simple. Not to mention I think most would agree that being shot at from the road by a dog runner is insane.

It was discussed at the meeting tonight. There were at least 200 supporters of dog hunting in attendance tonight (still not nearly a full representation). The discussion was very civil and cordial by all in attendance. It will be discussed again and again until the commissioners undo what they have done.

Tessie

I am fully aware that there will be a monthly meeting tonight of the commissioners, as usual. I'm 53 years old. Not a kid. I was informed by a commissioner that there will be no discussion tonight on the issue of dog running by deer hunters. The issue has gone beyond the commissioners level.

To everyone in this BLOG:

Before you post anything about running dogs, know your hunting rules and regulations..Hunter19, running dogs is not an outlaw event..some of you people on here sound very young. I am eager to see which ones of you show up at the mtg tonight. But once again, read up! And save yourself the harm of looking ignorant and the satisfaction of me reading it. farming3-maybe you need a politics lesson! The mtg is still on for tonight everyone..once again, we have ignorance in Richmond County

Tboy, I agree with you that some hunters that shoot first and then look last..there are some that are considered savage hunters. But not all of us. Some of us are ethical hunters and hunt for meat purposes. I am in a club that is into deer management. We are not allowed to shoot does in certain areas and we frown on killing young bucks. I apologoze for anyone's horrid dealings with hunters and their dogs but please remember that there are still some of us that abide by laws and rules out there..

The topic of hunting deer with dogs will not be discussed at the commissioners meeting tomorrow night. It has moved on to another level and is not on their agenda.

OK..Here's how it is. Show up at the County Commissioners Meeting tomorrow night and let's all have a civil discussion.. I'm not going to sit here and argue with ignorance because everyone is entitled to their own opinion here!

Hunters are suppose to be a big family..my family is who started me hunting years ago and its more than just a sporting event, its a time to get together with close friends and family. I love running dogs and I love to still hunt. But we have all got to stick together like a real family! Thanks, Tessie Caulder

aboutsomethings-

I think you are the one who needs to watch their mouth and stop being so childish. You are on here throwing a tantrum because your outlaw sport is coming to an end in a hurry. Telling people they should go to jail that havent done anything is crazy considering you are a dog hunter who im sure has broken every rule in the book many times.

you need to watch your mouth !! this is getting out of hand. but bob McCrary was a real good friend and he did not have a FATAL HEART ATTACK !!! he died from fatal injuries from the fall.so watch your mouth !! this is becoming childish!! all you people want to do on here is cut people down. and its senseless. they should ban people commenting to these letters !!! lets see how many of the still hunters are at the next meeting !!!and i catch my fish !! never been in a fish market!!!

there are some, i mean some good dog hunters out there. so give them credit before running them in the ground. and i happen to be one of them !!!! we hunt our own land and our dogs dont run though no one else`s !!! so give some of us a break !!!

To: aboutsomethings. First his name was McCrary, not McCray. As many years as he had been hunting from a stand, it was very likely not an accident. You should think more along the line of "a fatal heart attack." Bob was probably dead before he fell to the ground. And as for your "quick kills" and getting home, I'll just bet that you're too lazy to fish. Just buy'em at the market and get home !!!

No, I'm not shooting dogs. I would only shoot a dog if I thought it had rabies or was trying to harm me or my family. But, if dog runners are not going to obey the laws then I'm sure there will be many who will do just the same.

If Mr. Quick is such a fine, upstanding citizen, he certainly isn't above breaking the law or suggesting ways to do so. As he said, and I quote "just take off the ID collars and tracking collars and turn the dogs loose. Then they can't trace the owners." Now, that's a responsible hunter. No regard for safety to others and doesn't care about trespassing. Also, those dogs will be shot on the spot by landowners because they won't have a collar. Also, still hunters don't sit all day in their stands.

“I have had 24 cases regarding animal cruelty in the past six months, none of them were regarding hunting dogs,” said Richmond County Animal Cruelty Investigator Mark Pankey.

if you knew mr. quick as good as you think you do. he dont hunt or have any dogs !!!! and how do you get .34 acres. you sure dont know what you are talking about. get your facts straight !!!! tired of everybody running him in the ground!!! hes a fine man !!! and i simply pity the ignorance of still deer hunters !!! cause while you sittin there all day on your tree stand, i`m at home with my DEER !!!!

Mr. Quick is a prime example of the mentality displayed by dog runners. If he had'em running across his .34 acres, he'd be raising ****.

I agree with Mr. Sides on his opinion of them. They are the lowest of the lowest and have no regard for the dogs which they own, or the still hunters.

I wonder how many half starved and killed (by owners) deer dogs I'll find in the woods this upcoming deer season.

It's pathetic, but this crowd has only the "thrill of the chase" in mind, and whatever comes to be first in sight, they blast away.
