It was an excellent ceremony, emotional at times, and held in a beautiful location. The Cub Scouts did a good job of presenting the colors. Misty Gibson did a fantastic job of singing the National Anthem as it should be sang. Her daughter read a poem she wrote about veterans. Command Sergeant Major Terry Wheeler Jr. gave a moving address and the wreath laying ceremony was conducted with dignity.
The names of the 11 men that were killed in Vietnam that were from Richmond County were read by two members of the AMVETS and each name was saluted as it was read. Then the ceremony was ended by a young man, rendering “Taps” but I did not get his name.
My thanks to all those who participated in getting this all together. Thanks to all who attended and a special thanks to all who labored to make the Veteran’s Memorial Park a beautiful tribute. They continue to work on it and it is something that the entire county can take pride in.
If you haven’t seen it recently, I urge you to go by and look it over. You might be surprised and moved by what they have there. I’m sure that I speak for all veterans when I say “thank you.”
