The Rankin Museum of American Heritage, Ellerbe, has announced its schedule for Summer 2010 Student Workshops to be held between June 23 and August 18.
Students should begin registering because limited-size classes (10 each) will be filled on a first-come, first-serve basis. Call Gail Benson at 652-6378 to register.
June 23, Colonial Trades I: In this workshop, students will learn about the different skills and trades Europeans brought to America during colonial times. Through crafts and hands-on activities, they will explore a few of the trades. The event is for students six to eight years of age and will be held from 9 a.m. to noon. Cost is $20.
June 30, Colonial Trades II: This is a workshop like Colonial Trades I except for ages nine to 11 years old. It will also be held from 9 a.m. to noon and will cost $20.
July 14, Let's Talk Dirt I: The Rankin Museum will partner with the Richmond County Soil and Water Conservation District to present a program on the importance of protecting soil and water for the future. Students will participate in many activities to learn about conservation measures. This event is for ages six through eight from 9 a.m. to noon and will cost $20.
July 21, Let's Talk Dirt II: This workshop is similar to Let's Talk Dirt I except it is for students nine to 11 years of age. It will also be held from 9 a.m. to noon for a cost of $20.
July 28, Pee Wee I Dig Dinosaurs: This event is for children three to five years old to be held from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Parents are welcome to attend with children. They will be exploring the fossil remains of the giant reptiles, which once roamed the Earth, by unearthing and identifying dinosaur bones. The cost is $10.
August 4, Weave Like a Navaho: For ages 10 to 15 years old, students will examine beautiful rugs made by Navaho Indians of the Southwestern United States. They will create a small rug using the same methods as the Navaho. Cost will be $20.
August 11, Pee Wee Antique Toys: Children ages three to five will recreate antique toys based on scientific principles such as balance, centrifugal force and gravity while having fun playing with them. The workship will be held from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Parents are welcome to attend with children. Cost is $10.
August 18, Rankin Explorers Travel to Africa: For students 10 to 15 years of age, the workshop will study the geography of Africa and present the people through craft, food, storytelling, games and hands-on activities. The cost is $20.
Fees are charged for the workshops to cover the costs of materials used by students in projects they take home after the activity and other workshop material.
