Derby Days are held the first Saturday of each month, beginning in May and continuing through August. The next one will celebrate the role of pollinators.

Each event teaches about a topic important to the needs of farming and agriculture. Triple L. Farms of Derby will be hosting each of the events. June 5 will be Junebug Day.

“Strawberry Strut went very well, and we are looking forward to the next one,” said Marcia Lambeth of the first Derby Day.

David Almond of the Richmond County Beekeepers will be bringing a beehive to teach about bee’s, Paige Hudson, acting director of the Cooperative Extension Office, will speak about other pollinators. John Webb will perform songs and tell stories about nature.

“We love Derby, and just like for people to visit us,” said Lambeth, owner of Triple L. Farms.

Burns explained that Richmond County holds valuable resources in the form of farmers.

“They produce some of the healthiest foods we can eat,” he said.

The days will feature events such as a horseshoe tournaments, face painting and other games. Local crafters will be present as well. Food and candy will also be sold. Lambeth explained that they try to make it a day that reminisces on traditional farm days.

“It is a way to help people make an easy choice to have a great Saturday in Derby and visit a part of the county they may not visit often,” said Burns.

Each event also has a four mile run/walk held in conjunction with each Derby Day.

“We are just trying to promote farming and farmers,” said Lambeth.

Lambeth explained that the farm was started by her husband’s parents and has been around for many years.

“Everybody who lived on that farm, worked on it,” said Lambeth.

They have attempted to collect memorabilia from that time to display in their produce stand to create a traditional feel, which is what the Derby Days attempt to re-enact.

Ken Rabb, who works for Triple L. Farms, explained that each event is designed to allow people to put a face with the produce that the farm sales, as well as to allow people to visit a farm and catch a glimpse of what a family farm is about.

“It will be a lot of fun,” said Rabb of the upcoming Junebug day. “Those who might not know the rich southern heritage of farming will get a chance to see it.”

Rabb also said that a very important part of each Saturday is the time it gives people away from their everyday busy lives and visit an old fashioned community.

July 3 is Pretty-as-a-Peach-Day, where there will be homemade peach cobbler. August 7 will be Lazy-Hazy-Day in the Derby where the store will provide melon slices and roasted corn.

“We are trying to get back to a simpler time,” said Rabb.
