When Richmond Senior High senior Jennifer Powell takes the stage with her flute at the school’s spring concert, it will be with a heavy heart.

“This will be my last concert here at Rockingham,” the senior said this week. “Really, it will also be my first in awhile because I just took band in the 12th grade, and now I wish I’d taken it the whole time.”

The Richmond Senior High School Band and Show Choir have been putting in a lot of work to prepare for the Spring Concert at 7 p.m. May 25 at the Cole Auditorium.

Admission is free, and the public is invited to attend.

Senior Amber Denny plays trumpet in the band and is planning to attend N.C. State next year.

“It’s our last one, and we want to make the Class of 2010 go out with a bang,” Denny said. “We’ve been working really hard trying to correct every mistake. We even recorded ourselves, and listened back to our weak points.”

“I think it will be a great performance,” senior Dustin Funderburke said. “All of our seniors have been putting in our all because we want to make it as good as possible and go out the right way.”

Band Director Mike Ward said 13 seniors will be performing in the concert, and it’s hard to see the group go.

“We’ve been working on the music for this particular performance since (March), and I’m very proud of their hard work,” Ward said. “Even with the end of school and testing going on, they come in here everyday and never complain about playing. It’s a very wonderful teaching situation.”

He said the band is playing selections including “The Star Spangled Banner,” “Flourish for Wind Band,” “Ye Banks and Braes O’Bonnie Doon,” “Timesliding Towards Twirling” and “Ascend.”

The RSHS Show Choir will also feature three seniors among its 20 performers at the concert, in Chuck Wright, Chelsea Bishop and Cameron Hunt.

Wright and Bishop both have solos in the upcoming show.

“The Show Choir is a performance group of 10th, 11th and 12th graders that cover genres from sacred, to vocal jazz, to pop and more,” Choir Director Debbie Price said. “At last year’s concert, we did 14 selections, and we plan on doing about that many this year ... It won’t be an eternal concert. We want to keep it interesting.”

She said this year’s selections are as of yet undetermined. She does, however, know what genres will be covered in the set list.

“We’ll be doing a wide variety of selections from sacred Latin to 1960’s pop,” Price said. “It won’t be just a one-genre show.”

She went on to say that all the hard work the group has put into its performances throughout the year will culminate with the performance next week.

“The fun isn’t necessarily in the classroom time, because that’s a lot of hard work that we put in here,” Price said, indicating the floor below her in her classroom. “The show is a time when they can see what’s possible, and receive the pay-off for all that hard work.”
