Richmond Community College President Dr. Dale McInnis presents Megan Neimyer of Hamlet her Associate in Applied Science Degree in Nursing. RCC Board of Trustee Chairman Hugh Lee stands ready to congratulate her. RCC President Emeritus Dr. Diane Honeycutt, the keynote speaker, also congratulated the graduates.
RCC President Dr. Dale McInnis welcomed the graduates and their families and congratulated the Class of 2010 for being the largest in RCC’s history.
“I want to thank everyone who has supported these graduates over the past months and years it has taken for them to reach their goals today. Graduates, it’s your day. Enjoy each and every moment,” he said.
Student Government Association April Shelton told the graduates that participating in the ceremony showed their courage, dedication and perseverance. She congratulated them and encouraged them on their endeavors as they continued their education or moved into the workforce.
RCC President Emeritus Dr. Diane Honeycutt was the keynote speaker. Her remarks centered on the theme of “SUCCESS.” She said students needed to be self-starters, practice understanding, have confidence and courage, be enthusiastic and sharing, and be self-actualizing.
“Self-actualizing comes from a book on ‘transactional analysis’ called ‘I’m OK, You’re OK.’ It was written in the seventies. Basically the book stated, if I’m not okay, you can’t be okay. You have go to come to grips with yourself, who you are, and like yourself. We all have baggage, don’t carry it with you: Let it go. We all have pity parties, but don’t let them become your life. Basically, be yourself and practicing good human relations will help you become successful,” said Honeycutt.
In closing, she quoted former RCC Trustee John Forte. He told her to always put her priorities in order and live by them.
“Those priorities are God, family, and career. I try to never forget these, because I am proud to say they are mine. Set your priorities and live with them, and you will be successful and become good leaders,” she said.
RCC Board of Trustee Chairman Hugh Lee and McInnis presented Honeycutt an Honorary Associate in Arts Degree, the highest honor the college can bestow. Honeycutt said after 38 years of being at the college, she did not have one and would always be proud to have it.
