A Rockingham woman is out on $100,000 bond after allegedly receiving a package from the U.S. Postal Service containing 14 pounds of marijuana.
Brittany Johnson, 22, of Daniels Lane, Rockingham was arrested on April 30 and charged with one count each of felony trafficking in marijuana and felony maintaining a vehicle or dwelling for a controlled substance.
She was arrested at her place of employment, Barbie Braids on Rockingham Road.
Johnson’s criminal background includes multiple misdemeanor offenses, but she has no previous drug arrests.
Rockingham Police Chief Robert Voorhees said the arrest came as the result of a joint investigation by his department and U.S. Postal Inspector’s Office.
“This is a significant amount,” he said. “Fourteen pounds of marijuana would affect many people in our community, and any time we get that amount at one time we’re very happy.”
Voorhees said the case may be referred to federal authorities after a thorough review of the evidence and sentencing guidelines is completed.
He also said Johnson is not the only target of the investigation.
“More arrests could follow in this jurisdiction, and in other jurisdictions,” Voorhees said.
