RALEIGH (AP) — First-term Rep. Larry Kissell has survived a Democratic primary challenge in North Carolina’s 8th Congressional District but must wait for an opponent.

Body armor company founder Tim D’Annunzio of Raeford and retired TV sportscaster Harold Johnson of Concord were headed to a runoff in the district’s Republican primary on June 22.

With nearly all precincts reporting, D’Annunzio had 37 percent of the vote while Johnson had 33 percent. The leading candidate needed 40 percent to win outright.

Unofficial results Tuesday showed Kissell was beating former campaign volunteer Nancy Shakir of Fayetteville 63 percent to 37 percent. Shakir mounted a primary challenge in part because Kissell had voted against the health care bill.
