New Year New You program is in the final week of the challenge. The participants have succeeded in making life changes, regardless of their weight loss.

“One of the biggest things I have learned is counting calories, and watching what you are eating and exercise is a big part of it,” said Tricia Wilson. “I always assumed if you do not eat you will lose weight, but withholding the body food hurts in the long run.”

The participants will wrap up the challenge with a celebration dinner at FirstHealth Richmond Memorial Hospital this evening.

The contestants have enjoyed the opportunity to learn about nutrition, how to shop and the importance of reading the labels. Contestant Barbara Poston explained that she now knows to pay attention to what she is buying.

“Read the labels before you purchase an item. Shop smarter and pay attention,” Poston said of what she will take away from the challenge.

Estridge also expressed the importance of learning how to shop and knowing what to look for on nutrition labels.

Dr. Lauren Alter served as the medical consultant for the program as well as a participant. Alter wanted to take part in the challenge so that she could be an example to her patients.

“When I started I was focusing on not eating, but what I found was smaller portions are necessary,” said Alter. “I have started eating healthier and less.”

Many of the contestants explained enjoying the new fitness opportunities they have taken part in over the past 13 weeks.

“My favorite was the water aerobics,” said John Downs.

Along with the necessary nutrition and exercise information the group feels they have made friends who will support and encourage them in their future fitness endeavors.

“I met some good friends that I know will push me when I need it,” said Poston.

Wilson said there were many people that she knows will help her and give her the encouragement she needs to keep going when she does not what to continue.

“The group has become close and naturally supports one another,” said Wilson.

Amy Forester, instructor for the nutrition class, explained how much she enjoyed watching the group continue to grow and become a support system for one another.

The contestants as a whole remarked that they believe they will continue to exercise; many were looking into their monthly gym memberships already.

“It really is a lifestyle change,” said Wilson.

Poston jokingly said that she learned that there is more to life than just watching television. Exercising has been one of the biggest changes Poston has made in the challenge.

Harry Coble is the leader of the weight loss challenge and has lost more than 35 pounds. His trainer, Richard Ethridge, explained that Coble is determined to make a change. The contestant’s weight loss ranges from nothing to Coble’s almost 37 pounds. Regardless, each member of the group feels as if he or she has reached a personal goal. Estridge has not seen large numbers in the number of pounds she has lost, but has dropped two pant sizes.
