My favorite part of the political campaigns, are the campaign promises. The reason being that there is always somebody around that remembers what was said, even if it’s only the media. No matter how big or small the election, somebody always remembers. So, in order to make a campaign promise, you have to take a stand.

Where the Richmond County Sheriff’s race is concerned, my hands down favorite campaign promise has come from Eddie Martin. He said, “He’d have the S.B.I (State Bureau of Investigation) do a detailed inventory of the evidence room at the Richmond County Sheriff’s Department before he even sat down in office chair.”

Now that’s something that the other three candidates, (who are all deputies), would never do. For them, it would be like saying to guys they’ve worked with for years, “I think you might be a dirty cop.” And that is never going to happen.

There may not be a dirty cop at the Richmond County Sheriff’s Department but there have been enough allegations over the course of years that it definitely needs to be looked into. The first step in that process is for every dollar, gram of cocaine and speck of marijuana to be inventoried by the S.B.I. I think the fact that Eddie Martin is going to request it right out of the gate is pretty incredible. Not only is it the kind of commitment to integrity that we need to see in that job but it’s the surest sign yet that Eddie Martin wants to shine a bright light on the department which he heads. And light is the best disinfectant.

"A dirty cop..." powerful accusations from a man who posted himself online committing a drug violation. I am disgusted by your letter. I hate that Eddie Martin's name was even mentioned in this letter...Is your implication that the other candidates, James Clemmons, Wendall Sessoms, and Bo Frye are dirty cops? You couldn't be further from the truth! I personally know and respect each of those men. Please keep your implications to yourselves. All of the hard working men and women of the Sheriff's Departments are good people. Dirty cops? Extorted money, please?? These workers hardly make enough for the abuse and negative comments they receive on a daily basis from citizens like you. I guess that's the great thing about America...you can say whatever you want with no facts to back up what you're saying. These are good people who don't deserve to have their reputations diminished by someone like you, who posts himself in a video on youtube buying crack cocaine. What an upstanding citizen you are.

I agree with the previous post. Mr. Martin has not earned any position in his 41 year law enforcement career. He was appointed to the Chief of Police of Rockingham after working a short time with the Railroad Police (sounds like politics to me). He may have 41 years in law enforcement, but he has not even worked up through the ranks in the RPD. He definitely has not worked hard or earned what has been GIVEN to him. Mr. Martin needs to go home. He is out of touch with the general public and I do agree that he appears to be angry and bitter. Why? I just do not know, especially when things have been given to you in your career. How can he even bragg about his 41 years in law enforcement. He saying what he thinks the public wants to hear. It is just ashame what some people will do!!!!
