It was the kind of game that would ultimately be won by the team that caught a break or two and did all the little things right.
Monday night, Raider Gold was that team, as the Gold squad played small ball to rally for three runs in the bottom of the sixth en route to a 3-2 win over its Green counterparts.
With the win, Raider Gold swept the season series between the two squads.
In the bottom of the sixth, Chalin Williamson and Jacob Staub led off with singles, Drew Butler hit a sacrifice fly to right, allowing Williamson to move to third. Then Adam Sweatt laid a textbook sacrifice down the first-base line, allowing Williamson to tie the game at 1.
Devontae Watkins hit a single to right, plating Staub. The throw in to second was mishandled, allowing the third run to score.
Raider Green mounted its own rally in the top of the seventh, as Cody Wilson and Mikey Steele opened the inning with singles. But Wilson was caught trying to steal third.
Steele later scored on a Cole Lovin single.
Gold coach Jason Norton said both pitchers — Steele for the Green team, and Jacob Sears for the Gold — did a fine job.
“Jacob kept us in the game until we were able to get our bats going,” Norton said.
Green coach Dustin Braddock, meanwhile, was proud of his team’s effort.
“These have been a great bunch of guys,” Braddock said. “I hope some of them can play at the next level.”
Raider Green ends its season at 8-4. Raider Gold, meanwhile, is 8-1 heading into Wednesday night’s season finale at Scotland.
