Jeremy Deshaun Teriba, 21, succumbed to a gunshot wound he received Thursday afternoon at his Cauthen Drive apartment.
Rockingham Police responded to the apartment at 1:05 p.m. Thursday, and found Teriba lying on the kitchen floor with a gunshot wound to the head.
A handgun was recovered at the scene.
He was first taken to FirstHealth Richmond Memorial Hospital, then transferred to its sister hospital in Pinehurst, where he died at approximately 10:30 Thursday night.
Investigators indicated the shooting may have been accidental.
“The investigation is on-going,” Rockingham Police Chief Robert Voorhees said Friday morning. “We do not suspect foul play in the shooting incident itself. The investigation into the origin of the weapon used and circumstances surrounding the incident are on-going.”
Teriba’s body has been taken to the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Chapel Hill for an autopsy.
