Belk Department Store will hold their semiannual charity sale on May 1. The sale is held in the fall and the spring with proceeds benefiting local charities, schools and nonprofit organizations.
Charities participating in the event are asked to sell tickets to get into the store’s four hour shopping event. The charities keep all of the money raised during the presale. The tickets are $5 each and the shopper gets the $5 off their purchase that morning.
“It’s a win-win for non profits participating and for the Belk shoppers,” said Michelle Parish of United Way who is participating in the event.
Belk of Rockingham currently has six organizations participating in the event.
“I would like any and all charities to participate. We don’t keep the profits, it just raises money for them,” said Kathy Hardison, sales support manager of Belk. There are no requirements for the charities and non-profits to participate other than selling tickets in advance.
The first 100 customers in the store receive a Belk gift card ranging from $5 to $100, and a chance to win one of three $1,000 cards awarded company wide.
Tickets entitle the shoppers to enter the store and purchase merchandise discounted up to 70 percent including special savings on rarely discounted brands. Belk cardholders receive double rewards points during the 6 to 10 a.m. morning sale.
Last fall the Rockingham Belk raised $15,000 selling 3,000 tickets.
“The United Way and our partner agencies has working with Belk and appreciate the opportunity to continue this partnership,” Parish said.
