Early on, the game shaped up as a pitching duel between Richmond’s Jordan Tucker and Scotland’s William Adams.
The J.V. Raiders got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first. With one out, Andrew Henderson walked, stole second, then stole third. Ryan Mercer played Henderson with a groundout.
The Scots finally cracked the scoreboard in the top of the fifth. With one out, Hayden Bufflin singled and then scored on a Jim Chavis homer to left, putting the Scots on top, 2-1.
But as they have all season, the J.V. Raiders had a response. Nathan Cain started the bottom of the fifth with an infield single. Daniel Sweat sacrificed Cain to second, and then Gregg Balzer plated Cain with an RBI triple, tying the score at 2.
Austin Brower drove in Balzer with a single, then stole second. Henderson singled in Brower for a 3-2 J.V. Raider lead. Henderson and Tucker later added RBI singles.
Tucker said he had all four of his pitches working well.
“And the defense played great behind me,” Tucker said.
Brower pitched a scoreless seventh to nail down the win.
“I like pitching in that situation,” Brower said.
