The Humane Society of Richmond County is temporarily suspending the $20 Low Income Public Assistance Spay Neuter program. Reimbursement to Richmond County for eligible surgeries by the state of North Carolina is running four to six months behind, said Candy Bacon, director. That amounts to $6,000 to $9,000 that the Humane Society is out-of-pocket while awaiting reimbursement.

The Humane Society will continue to offer spay neuter vouchers for $57 (male cat) to $77 (large male or female dog). The vouchers cover the cost of surgery, a one year rabies vaccine, pain medications and antibiotics if needed, and transportation to and from the Spay Neuter Veterinary Clinic located on Highway #1 in Vass.

The program is open to all in or out-of-county residents with no income restrictions. South Carolina residents are also eligible for this program. Money generated from the sale of the vouchers fully pays for the surgeries and rabies vaccines as well as the cost of transportation and personnel. No taxpayer dollars, Humane Society donations or grant funds are used to operate the spay neuter program.

The low cost one day surgery spay neuter program saves pet owners an estimated $50 up to $200 for most uncomplicated surgeries. Females in heat or pregnant or animals 51 pounds or more could add an additional $50 to $100 to that savings.

Vouchers can be purchased at the Humane Society Animal Shelter, 529 US Highway 74 Business West, Rockingham. Business hours are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday noon to 4 p.m. and Sunday 1 to 4 p.m. Call 910-895-0335 for more information.
