Thursday night, the Raiders won their third meet in as many days, topping Lumberton, 8-1 in a Southeastern Conference matchup.
It was the first time the two teams have played in recent memory, as conference realignment just brought the schools back into the same conference.
Richmond coach Paula York is “ecstatic” with her team’s early season showing.
“Leadership has been the key for us,” York said, especially citing the work of Max Wittek and Alex Auman.
“Those two players have set the bar for us, and the younger players have risen to the challenge,” York said.
Thursday night, the Raiders took five of the six singles matches, and swept all three doubles matches to move to 4-1 overall in 2010 (3-0 SEC).
At No. 1 singles, Wittek beat Britt Williams, 6-3, 6-1; at No. 2, Auman defeated Connor Haskins, 6-1, 6-1; at No. 3, Jonathan Thames downed David Butler, 6-2, 6-2; at No. 4, Andrew Wheeler beat Ross Masters, 6-4, 4-6, 10-7; at No. 5, Ryan Page defeated Michael Bailey, 6-2, 6-3; and at No. 6, Lumberton’s Cameron Adams beat Cameron Page, 6-4, 2-6, 10-6.
Experience has also helped the Raiders get out to their quick start, York said.
The Raiders will have today off, York said. “Our legs are a little tired,” she added.
Richmond returns to action on Tuesday at Pinecrest. First match is scheduled for 4 p.m.
