The accident took place shortly after 8 p.m. Sunday on Sycamore Lane in Derby, when a car driven by 17-year-old Benjamin Tyler Terry crossed the center line and struck the vehicle of Aberdeen resident Joyce Durham, killing her.
Ron Durham, Joyce’s brother and the two children’s uncle, said they are both recovering from the injuries they received in the crash.
They are 17-year-old Kianna Sturdivant and 10-year-old Kevenn Durham.
“They are both doing pretty good, especially him,” Ron explained. “He’s out of the woods, but I had to inform him about his mother.”
The 10-year-old was released from FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital Sunday night, but his sister continues to be treated in Charlotte.
“She broke both her legs and cracked her pelvis,” Ron continued. “Also, her ribs are all bruised up. She won’t be able to attend her mother’s funeral because they have her under sedation.”
The driver of the other vehicle, 17-year-old Benjamin Tyler Terry, was released from FirstHealth Moore Regional Medical Center and transfered to Chapel Hill.
The North Carolina Highway Patrol said Tuesday charges are pending in the case, and further investigation is underway.
Terry faces the possibility of a vehicular homicide charge from the investigation.
