She was born in Horry County, S.C. on Feb. 2, 1932 to the late Dock and Elizabeth Wright Gore. Prior to her retirement, she worked as a medical technician. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Lee Oakes, and a sister Laura Graves.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday, March 17, in the Shining Light Freewill Baptist Church with Rev. Howard Smith and Rev. Joe Wilkes officiating. Interment will follow in the Northam Cemetery Extension.
She is survived by a son, Edward Oakes Jr. of Pinehurst; a daughter, Sherill Malloy of Rockingham; a sister, Pearl Nordenbrook of Alexandria, Va.; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at Russell-Marks Funeral Home.
