Countess was an adult female Doberman abandoned at shelter. She tested heartworm positive and needed treatment. A Doberman rescue agency helped HSRC place her in a new home.
The tournament is usually held in August, said Candy Bacon, Humane Society director.

A field of 80 players is anticipated with a shot-gun start at 12:15 p.m. following a light luncheon. Registration will begin at 10 a.m. Cost per player is $50;. It will be a captain’s choice format.
Player registration is open to complete the field of play. For sponsor and player information, contact the Humane Society at 895-0335, Candy Bacon at 205-1596 or Valerie Davis at 334-0275. Past players and sponsors should watch for registration information being mailed in the coming week.
Dieffenbach GM Superstore will offer a 2010 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 4WD Extended Cab LT2 to the player making a hole-in-one. This $35,700 (MSRP) vehicle comes with a V-8, CD and remote keyless entry.
Open sponsored events with free team entry include: Tournament sponsor ($5,000 donation), tournament co-sponsor ($2,500 donation), $10,000 Putt ($1,000 donation), Closest to Pin Contest – four holes ($250 donation each), contest sponsor ($350 donation) and 18 tee box/18 green sponsors ($250 donation).
Contests include longest drive, most accurate drive, pitching wedge, sand trap and closest to pin. Sponsorship of contest without a team is $250 and tee box/green sponsorship without a team is $100.
Donated items are also needed for door prizes and player raffle. All sponsors will receive course signage and brochure advertising.

Since July 1, 2002, over 32,000 dogs, cats, puppies and kittens have passed through the doors of the HSRC Animal Shelter. Many of these furry friends found new homes and many did not; but all found love, comfort, and care for a period of time.
For calendar year 2010, the HSRC Animal Shelter expects to receive 4,100 stray, abandoned or unwanted animals. This number reflects a decrease of 10 percent in the number of animals received primarily due to the three very aggressive spay/neuter programs facilitated by the Humane Society as well as humane education programs in 177 Richmond County public and private classrooms. Classroom sponsorships are available for $25.
This “safe haven” costs the Humane Society of Richmond County in excess of $25,000 per month, Bacon said. Utility costs alone, for the month of December 2009, have increased 25 percent despite less kilowatt hours and therms of natural gas being used versus usage in December 2008.
Bacon said as little as $100 could sponsor a tee box or a green and provide three male cats surgery or sponsor a $250 contest and assure three dogs’ surgeries, vaccines and new homes.
The Humane Society needs your help to keep our mission on track: providing a safe haven to stray, abandoned, unwanted animals, preventing cruelty to animals, reduction in the number of unwanted births among animals and the extension of humane education.
“Dig deep, the cats and dogs of Richmond County are counting on you!” Bacon said.
