Former volleyball player Michelle Brown will play volleyball at Sandhills Community College in Pinehurst, while softball player Rebecca Kinsey will play softball at Stanley Community College in Albermarle.
Brown has been in the Lady Raider volleyball program for the past three years. Her senior year was her first on the varsity.
A natural setter, she can play every position on the court, which added to her upside for college recruiters.
Brown hopes to earn an associate degree in nursing and then transfer to a four-year school, possibly East Carolina University.
“I’m very excited about the chance to keep playing,” Brown said.
Sandhills volleyball coach Alicia Hill, in her second season, is putting together her first recruiting class and expects Brown to come in and make an impact right away.
“She can do it all, and she’s got a great attitude,” Hill said.
“She’s very encouraging to her teammates, and that’s something I look for.
Richmond volleyball coach Wendy Wallace said Sandhills is getting “Not only a good player, but a good person.”
Kinsey, meanwhile, is a catcher for the Lady Raiders. She came to the attention of Stanley coaches through her summer travel softball team, the Diamond Divas.
She plans to major in education, get her two-year degree, and then transfer to a four-year school, possibly the University of North Carolina at Pembroke.
But before that, there will be the chance to continue her softball career at the next level.
“I’m very excited about it, and I’m looking forward to playing some more softball,” Kinsey said.
“Especially the chance to do that and stay close to home.”
Kinsey is in her second year as a starter for the Lady Raiders.
Wallace, who also coaches softball, said Kinsey is a great catcher as well as team leader.
“She leads the team both on and off the field, and keeps everything under control,” Wallace said.
“I don’t stress when she’s out there.”
Watching athletes graduate always generates mixed feelings, Wallace said.
“You hate to see them go, but you’re happy for them because they’re getting a chance to move on and play at the next level.”
