Letter to the Editor,

This is in response to the editorial of my good friend, Glenn Sumpter, in the Daily Journal Feb. 25 in which he made some snide remarks about the game of curling. Curling seems simple, but it takes great skill, mentally and physically, especially to your back.

Basically, it’s shuffle board on ice, but much more than that in the way in which you put speed on the rock, how fast the players sweep or brush the ice to warm it and make the rock go faster and curl. The game lasts 10 “ends” like innings in baseball with the team with the highest score winning. You can score one to four points depending on the placement of the rocks within the target. The center of the target is called a button.

The game originated in northern Europe in the 1500s, but Canada has made it an international sport. Canada will probably play in both the men’s and lady’s finals this week. So, if you want to see any of the curling, you must immediately look at the sports section of the Daily Journal and see on which NBC channels curling will be shown. If your wife wants to see the ice skating, pre-record the curling and watch it at some later time. You can also skip through some of the “ends” and catch the very end of a particular round. This young Swedish team that wasn’t supposed to earn a medal, is already in the semi-finals having eliminated a big favorite, Great Britain in the men’s. For more, go to www.curlingschool.com.

Of course, then there was a comment of my daughter-in-law Courtney Deane, who said she wished she had some of those players to sweep her floors.
