Reports were still rolling into the North Carolina Highway Patrol office Tuesday as to slick conditions caused a jump in the number of accidents due to snowy weather during the weekend of Feb. 12-13.

Between 9:30 p.m., roughly two hours after the snow started, and 11 p.m. the highway patrol reported 12 accidents, not including accidents responded to by other agencies.

Five accidents were reported between 4 a.m. and 11 p.m. on Saturday.

“We had quite a few accidents,” said Vivian Roberts, administrative assistant with the highway patrol. “

Roberts attributes the majority of the accidents to those traveling faster than conditions would allow and some attempting to enjoy the seasonal weather a little too much.

“Some people wanted to go out and play in the snow in their vehicles,” Roberts said. “They thought it would be safer when no one is out.”

The highway patrol tends to see a boost in accidents during inclement weather like last Friday’s snow, according to Roberts.

Although conditions were more forgiving than the first batch of snow late last month.

“It was a bit busier the first time it snowed, when we had the ice,” Roberts said.

Accidents reported by the North Carolina Highway Patrol include:

Due to snowy conditions, Cassie Marie Woods, 22, Roberdell Road, Rockingham, was involved in an accident on Ledbetter Street on Feb. 12 around 8:50 p.m.

The trailer came to rest on its right side.

Nicholson was transported to FirstHealth Richmond Memorial Hospital.

He was cited with an exceeding a safe speed violation.

Damage to his 2010 Mack was estimated at $100,000.

A three car pile-up on Hwy. 381 left three drivers with several thousand dollars in damage and a trip to the hospital.
