ROCKINGHAM – A physician with FirstHealth Richmond Family Medicine will discuss men’s health issues and take questions from participants during Men’s Health Night on March 30 at FirstHealth Richmond Memorial Hospital in the hospital’s Third-Floor Auditorium.
The presentation by Steven Alexander, M.D., will focus on prostate cancer screening.
“This is a very important subject as it is one of the most common cancers affecting men,” Dr. Alexander said. “More information needs to be provided regarding the significance of screening – the advantages and disadvantages as well as screening guidelines. I hope to spark some communication regarding this matter between patients and their doctors.”
Ken Goodman chairs the board of the FirstHealth Richmond Memorial Hospital Foundation, which is sponsoring the Men’s Health Night program in an effort to encourage men to seek routine health care.
“Men, more than women, typically fail to get their physicals on a regular basis – despite the fact that preventive care is the cheapest, most effective health care there is,” Goodman said. “With this program, our goal is to help improve the overall health of our community, especially in men who tend not to take care of themselves as well as women. If we can do that, and if health care costs get lowered along the way, we basically benefit everyone involved.”
Steven Millen, ANP, also of Richmond Family Medicine, will assist Dr. Alexander with information about the results of the blood pressure, blood glucose and PSA (prostate specific antigen) screenings that will be offered during the event from 5 to 6 p.m. He will also provide education about diet and exercise, as they affect cholesterol, and about what to do in the event of an elevated PSA.
The evening will continue with a buffet dinner from 6 to 6:30 p.m. and conclude with Dr. Alexander’s presentation and the question-and-answer period from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
Dr. Alexander, who specializes in family medicine, joined Richmond Family Medicine last year after completing a medical residency at the University of Texas Health Science Center. He earned his medical degree from Kasturba Medical College in Karnataka, India.
Millen, who also specializes in family medicine, is an adult nurse practitioner. A Richmond County native who has been with Richmond Family Medicine since 2007, he earned his ANP degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
