Leath Memorial Library was the recipient of a $2,500 grant Friday morning from the Von Drehle Corporation for their upcoming Summer Reading Program.

“Make a Splash, Read” is this year’s summer program’s theme and with the money received from the Von Drehle Private Foundation, the library will have the funds to hire several new speakers for the program.

“This is really cool for the kids,” said Deborah Knight, outreach coordinator for Leath Memorial said. “It’s a really good quality program and kids can have a great time here.”

For this year, the library will use the money by inviting national story tellers, magicians and even representatives from the North Carolina Aquarium in Greensboro, all part of their summer’s theme — water.

This is the second year the library applied for the grant, although they have been holding the program for quite a while, according to Knight.

“We saw a good fit,” Joe Pankartz, site manager for Von Drehle said. “We look for opportunity where Von Drehle can support the community.”

Last year’s six week program saw a 33 percent increase from previous years, Knight said.

In addition, 1,600 children attended the summer reading program last year and Knight said she is excited about it.

“It’s worked out really well (with Von Drehle),” Knight said.
